I have received a personal e-mail about the mechanics of conducting a boycott of trucking companies that hire Temporary Foreign Workers. It would really be quite simple and it would not require any work. The names of trucking companies that hire Temporary Foreign Workers could be posted here by truck drivers who have confirmed that those trucking companies hire Temporary Foreign Workers or are threatening to replace Canadian truck drivers by filing an LMO. Truck drivers could choose to boycott those trucking companies by refusing to submit job applications to them. Truck drivers and anyone else could also choose not to purchase the products and services of the customers of trucking companies that hire Temporary Foreign Workers.

It would not be necessary to convince Canadians to support such a boycott. There is widespread anger about the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Temporary Foreign Workers in trucking are making pay and working conditions worse for Canadian truck drivers.

The Temporary Foreign Worker program is absolute garbage. And this notion that younger Canadians don't want to get into the industry is crap. I have been trying to get my class 1 through the government for the last year with absolutely no luck. Too many hoops to jump through. I was previously on EI a couple of years ago and under the EI policy I am eligible to have training funded if I was on EI in the last 3 years. I was on it two years ago, now working at a delivery company who is under-employing me. Work is very slow. I call up the offices who say even though I qualify for it, I have to be on EI in order to receive the funding. I can't go on EI unless I am laid off or haven't worked in 7 consecutive days (I didn't work for 6 days and got called in on the 7th, therefor making me ineligible for a forced layoff to go on EI).

I told the offices that I don't want to go on EI, I just want to get my funding to go through driving school to get my class 1. I don't want to sit at home collecting EI checks, I am still getting a bit of hours. Can't be done. It's backwards as hell that they won't fund a young Canadian who qualifies for the training because of some stupid red tape that makes absolutely no sense; it's just creating more needless paperwork for them. Here is a guy that just wants to receive training that I qualify for, I still want to work, I don't want to sit at home and get government money and I'm being denied this.

I am now going through driving school on my own dime (with the very little I am making).

Meanwhile, Temporary Foreign Workers from countries that don't even have the same climate or terrain as our country; countries that never see an ounce of snow coming here and being let loose in our mountains. There's no way to verify their experience.

I believe there should be accountability on the companies who bring these people over. For example, should one of these TFW drivers get into an accident due to lack of experience it should fall back on the company ten fold. Companies should need to pay higher insurance premiums when using TFWs etc.

Not just for trucking, I'm talking about any trade. They should need to pass a trades test to be allowed to work in Canada as an electrician, plumber, pipefitter etc. If they don't pass the test, they're deferred for 1-2 years much like the hiring process for the RCMP. It's as simple as that.

Why not just invest in Canadians?

If it is any consolation, the number of Temporary Foreign Workers is increasing.

Temporary Foreign Workers replacing Canadian truck drivers in Alberta are increasingly unqualified. Many must be trained from scratch. Many are terrible truck drivers that are a hazard to public safety. Many Temporary Foreign Workers are replacing Canadian truck drivers who were fired on the spot for complaining about safety or low pay.

If you wish to compete with Temporary Foreign Workers I advise you to:

    1. Give up your rights as a Canadian citizen.
    2. Agree to indenture yourself as a slave for two years.
    3. Work for less money than a Canadian.
    4. Smile and do what you are told without question, even if you are instructed to break Canadian law as a condition of your employment.

    Happy trucking!

Re: Temporary Foreign Workers in Fort Mac.

Funnily enough, I was in the drug testing clinic for my humiliating truck driver drug test and there were some Newfs there being tested for an ultra-crappy non-union construction job in Hells Acres, Northern Nowhere, Alberta. They were being replaced by Temporary Foreign Workers after several years on a job in plush Fort Mac. The funny part is that two of the replacement workers were sitting right beside me in the waiting room, not three meters from the unfortunate Newfs! Ha, ha! Poor Newfies! The Temporary Foreign Workers were from the Fujian province of China and they had obviously fake qualifications but they were satisfying their typically Foukienese wanderlust by traveling to Alberta at the expense of their contractor-employer (to take jobs from Newfs).

I hope that is clear from the content of this thread. To reiterate: I do indeed have it in for the TFW! I want the Temporary Foreign Worker Program stopped. The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is wildly out of control. It's creating a new class of workers without rights. It's driving down wages for Canadian citizens.

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program has replaced immigration as a means of increasing the population of workers in Canada.

    Re: Irish Immigrants

Until recently someone wishing to emigrate to Canada from Ireland would apply to be a citizen of Canada. Those Irish immigrants were granted rights of citizenship in Canada.

Victims of the real estate bubble burst in Ireland contemplating an escape to Canada may wish to note that Canada presently has a real estate bubble eerily similar to that of Ireland. It may be ironic to be in Canada as a worker with no rights when the bubble bursts.
