    TFW Programs by Other Names

Why does there seem to be an increase in the number of foreign replacement workers, especially in high-unemployment areas like Alberta and the Maritimes? There's the Sponsorship Program (aka Indentured Slave Program) especially popular for bringing unskilled low-wage "truck drivers" (aka Domestic Highway Terrorists) from India. There's also the ballooning International Mobility Program, which is the Temporary Foreign Worker Program by another name:

Reason for edit: Spelled "balloning" wrong, unbelievably.

It's simple. Companies are not paying a living wage... for Canadians. For immigrants, where there's 3,4, or even 5 people pooling incomes in a family, the cheaper wages don't have such a negative effect.

There is a shortage of skilled guys willing to work. I'm looking for a man right now in Medicine Hat Alberta. I'm offering more money than most people have ever seen and more money than others in my area.
I have no resumes from anyone with any experience at all. None. Zero. I'm considering looking abroad.

Not sure what real estate is like in Medicine Hat Albers but my daughter sold her non descript 3 bedroom bungalow in Ft Mac Alberta for $790k in 2014. Wages have to be in line with COL. Ft Mac had serious shortage of employees at the big box stores.
$40 a hour a guy would be living in his Yugo

Lucky her. She got out at the right time. Despite the fire taking out a lot of homes the real estate prices here are still way down.

Still a lot of good paying work here though so its still worth riding it out. I'm optimistic for this winter.

Not all people wishing to work in Canada are trying to escape the persecution in there own country and looking for a better life. I for one , it's been a life long ambition to drive through Canada and the State , not to make it rich but to see the country and meet the people that make the place tick. Do local driver really dislike foreigners that much? I know of 3 Canadian drivers working here in NZ and love the way they're treated .

If you want to see Canada, doing it as a truck driver would be the worst possible way to do it. Canada has the longest hours of service of any regulated country. You will see the hood of your truck and your odometer spinning wildly. If you want to see Canada by motorized vehicle go on vacation in Canada and ride your motorcycle.

Hugs and kisses to foreign drivers! We Luv U! Just don't take our jobs and drive down wages for Canadian truck drivers. And nobody said anything about Canadians disliking foreigners but thanks for trolling.

Thats funny ,the only trolling l do is out the back of my boat . Actually we have almost the same legal driving hours as Canada, l do my 14 hour day and 70 hour week every week . If company's are bring in cheap overseas labour to drive down wages then l absolutely agree with many of your and others comments on the subject, but if there is a genuine "shortage" of suitable applicants then why not allow foreign drivers to full the shortfall. We have the same issue here in NZ , and l have always wondered if it's a shortage of drivers or shortage of money's to pay suitable people thats the real problem . When l was eighteen l couldn't wait to get behind the wheel but now days young people don't seem to look down the "truck driver " job path .. As for seeing your country been there done that, and what a wonderful place it is , it's just l love my truck driving . Don't be over sensitive buddy EH
Can't wait for Marlin season so l can do some more trolling.

That is the issue. There is no genuine shortage of truck drivers in Canada. The situation for truck drivers in Canada is similar to the United States. Driver turnover in Canada is nearly 100% because truck driver pay in Canada is so low and the working conditions for truck drivers in Canada (and the United States) are absolutely terrible. Foreign truck drivers are being brought into Canada for no other reason than to lower truck drivers wages and working conditions to globalization levels. I don't want to be seen to be spewing hyperbolic socialist propaganda (although that is exactly what I am doing) but Canadian workers are being screwed by a Canadian government that is answering to a fascist corporate agenda. Canada has high structural unemployment. There are hundreds of thousands of Canadian truck drivers not working in trucking in Canada and there are millions of Canadians with no jobs (because there are no jobs and someone has to be unemployed). The last thing we need are temporary foreign workers to exacerbate the misery.

Note: Canadians are proud to be a multicultural country of immigrants. That is why I am sensitive to suggestions that Canadians may "dislike foreigners".
