It isn't hard to catch a driver who is selling fuel. Proving it in a court of law is another matter. If it could be proven then I would file criminal charges against the driver. If not, then he would be history and I would have no problem sharing my experience with him with other carriers. Most who steal will not give the victim (company) as a reference. You could pay some drivers $1 million dollars a year and they would still steal. It is a character flaw with some people. They don't realize that pay for others can be lower due to their dishonesty. They probably don't even care. I have yet to have a driver who has stolen fuel from me to give me as a reference. That is one reason why some who previously had a number of trucks have sold them and gone back to driving one truck themselves. If you have drivers you need to constantly check their fuel usage. If they suddenly start using more fuel then they are most likely stealing your fuel. If they say that they have had fuel stolen out of their truck than ask for a police report. Limit the amount of fuel that they can purchase daily by gallons or a dollar amount. You can restrict the amount a driver can spend on most fuel cards. You won't stop the theft, but can reduce your exposure or losses. If you find that a driver has stolen fuel or anything else from you get rid of him. He will steal from you again. If you fire him he will steal from his next employer and I guarantee you that he stole from the company where he worked before you. I wish that there was a way to report and track drivers who steal from their companies. Unfortunately, it is a part of owning trucks. You will have some who will steal and abuse their equipment. It is one reason why many who have owned multiple trucks have sold all but the one they drive.

When I had drivers, I could always look at their fuel usage and fueling locations, T Chek and Petro Pass cards.
You can also sign up for daily fueling reports via email.
You trust somebody with 250k worth of equipment. But fuel cards are different.

Either way, the problem is solved.

Killing people is not a "legal" way to deal with the low-life good-for-nothing thieving scoundrels masquerading as truck drivers you may have accidentally hired, and doing so could land you in serious legal trouble....no matter how good it would feel to do it.

Don't forget.....the guys stealing fuel gain nothing until it's sold. Who's buying that cheap fuel from them? ; ) The owner/op (obviously) buying that cheap fuel is the only thing that drives the company driver to steal it in the first place.

Soooo, now you are going to blame the O/O because a company man is a low down dirty egg sucking dog of a thief? Personally I have owned trucks close to 20yrs now, I refuse to buy fuel from anywhere but the pump paid for by my own card. However, be that as it may, some guy that just had a motor blow and it broke him decides he needs grocery money for his family and takes the cheap fuel? Its not right but its so, I take very serious offense to your BS remark 609 , a thief is a thief is a thief and someone like you making excuses for him not taking responsibility for his actions is part of what is wrong with this bleeding heart liberal BS. Do not ever point your finger my direction again slick for someone elses immorality. If it wasn't for the O/Os there would never have been an industry, my last words on the matter.

Wow, so sorry I offended you....well, no not really. I actually could care less. I didn't call anyone names....company man or owner/op. I have been both myself. I was just pointing out what drives them to do what they (the theives whoever they are) do. Sure there are always going to be legitimate situations like you mentioned, I never said there weren't legitimate situations. You take offense to my remarks? Well good for you! Again, not that I care. You're right the thief is the thief, plain and simple. Now, perhaps it's time for your afternoon medications? By the way, I AM an owner/op ......"slick."

JJ I just reread what you wrote. NO that's not ok or legitimate for that guy to buy stolen fuel. I thought you said someone that blew their motor was selling their own fuel cheap. What you said was someone that blew their motor and was short on cash was buying stolen fuel! Again, in my opinion, that person is as much a theif as the one stealing fuel!

Let's think about this. Why did a major repair break him? Because he was underbidding the honest O/Os, thereby hauling cheap freight, couldn't afford to build up his repair reserve fund, and then it bit him in the butt when his engine locked up because he couldn't afford to change the oil on a regular basis. Now he's buying stolen fuel, still not building his reserve, and STILL underbidding and hauling cheap freight.
