When husband was with USX, we were home for a couple of days and dropped the trailer at a private lot by our daughters house, tractor went home down our road. I went to town to pay the electric bill and on the way back here was a big ol wrecker hooked up to the trailer. Husband had a lock on the kingpin and they had it hooked on the sides. He had a heck of a time convincing them that it was his truck, esp on Sat when you can't get USX to answer a phone. According to wrecker company the trailer had been reported stolen 2 yrs before, still don't know where they got that info from since he had just delivered a load at a Sam's Club to get us home on.

Someone on the way through had reported it parked there to collect the recovery fee, $50 at that time. How anyone believed a trailer was parked off the highway for 2yrs was a little unbelievable. Don't know what USX ended up having to pay on that deal since they came from Birmingham, AL. He had let his d/m know where the trailer was located at, etc. We spent many an hour hunting down trailers that were supposed to be at a location that had not even had an USX delivery in several years.

    NavigatorWife,

I think a lot of these US Xpress trailers aren't even stolen but misplaced. When our truck was at the International dealer in New Mexico, International told us they get calls from US Xpress all the time asking if they have trailer # so and so.

Sorry but I have to call pure BS on this. I run 2500 to 3000 miles OTR a week and get to a good safe place every night usually in a truck stop. I have time to shower, eat and do my laundry and get at least 7 hours of sleep every night which is all I need as I've turned into a cranky old fart. I also have time to go fly fishing in the 6 states I have non - resident licenses. I have spent a few days touring Civil War battlefields, played lots of cards and chasing a few gal pals around.
Yes you can have a life outside your home on the road. As others have mentioned be careful where you take and park your truck.

Me too. Plenty of things to do at home...so getting there is top priority.

But if I did run out of hours or got stuck out on the road for reasons beyond my control.....I had a Truck Stop Directory in the truck, and would call truck stops to find out if they had a bar, saloon, tavern, or drinking hole within walking distance of their establishment (this was before Yelp).
Approved parking is crucial during this activity, because that last thing you want is for someone knocking on your door, asking you to move the truck when you have had a few adult beverages.

That's good to know. I don't like to get out of the truck in West Memphis. It's scary there.

Just make sure you do it when the parking lot is nearly empty, otherwise it can be a pita to swing the trailer around the curve after the order box
