Stopping for weather, especially winter road conditions

Living in the Valley I have years of driving in the tule fog. It gets so bad here that it is hard to find an exit. What ever you do don't just stop on the side of the highway seen to many people parked in the back of those that do stop on the highway

 

I drove in fog this morning across Rogers pass at 4 am I was blown away how many fools were driving partially in my lane with their brights on.. I was taught not to go snow blind in snow or fog by using my dims . You really do see better and your eyes stay sharp using your dims.

Want to gain winter driving experience? Get the hell off the big road and take a lesser traveled state highway... And GO SLOW.

Perfect example...

Wyoming nearly complete whiteout, 4 to 10 inches of snow over ice on roadway, possible high winds. I-80 probably not the best place to gain winter driving experience. To many idiots.

Same conditions, same state, US 26... Much safer. Way fewer idiots.

 

A long time friend of mine who worked with me quit two years ago cause he said every weekend they'd send him up to the UP.
10 to 15+ feet of snow each winter.
He said he got tired of running the rubble strips to find his way.
I found it kinda peaceful.
I regularly run the old roads to stay away from the chaos during nighttime snowstorms.

 

Some of the worst whiteouts I’ve been in years ago were up by Marquette MI . I can see his point about getting annoyed running up there.

 

I think of my Dad, Working for Trans con, in the 80s. No stopping, chain up, and keep going. Pulling doubles.

don’t know what it is, but I agree with @Cattleman84, there is something weirdly serene and peaceful going up the road almost by yourself, 20 below, a thick white cloud of vapor from the stack, following the plows up the hill out of Helena..... just slow and go. You‘ll never get home if you’re sitting still. Slow and steady wins the race, and all that.
