Because with my style, straps can be parallel to the truck. Plus there is 2 metal sides to help keep the roll tight. In addition it takes 1/3 the space and is aluminum so it doesn’t rust. In the other one, one side is open so it doesn’t guide the strap as well. Also this strap winder is best with straps perpendicular to the trailer which takes more space and forklifts can run over your straps.

  3. Well after digging thru tons of paper work and books. I decided to contact kinedyne to ask if they had specs on the 4" straps they produce. I only got the reply of "check with fmcsa". The kinedyne guys only would reply with WLL of a product.
So. I contacted fmcsa DOT to get it from horses mouth. Which ended up being a pass the buck situation once again. To non-other than highway patrol, state partol or what ever else they are referred to in any given state.

So Mr. Highway patrol references to the "Out Of Service" manual criteria for this year. He tells me it changes every year this or that spec. So if your an owner look for a copy.
So the above picture is what he referred to as he talked to me. 1/4" cut is acceptable on one side of a 4" synthetic webbing strap. If you have another 1/4" cut on other side. It equals a total of 1/2" cut into the webbing strap. It's considered an OOS strap and should be removed and replaced. On asking about the red thread down the middle. He side stepped it to say it was a measuring point. But don't quote him on it.

@johndeere4020 so that isn't the paperwork I happen to read, but then the cops are using it as law.

To read this OOS manual 90% of trucks I've scene on the road yesterday would be out of service if these cops really followed all that is listed.

I had a load of brick on 5 or 6 years ago and got stopped in OH and he told me any 1/4" nick or cut was no good. He climbed up on my trailer several times while taking pictures with a digital camera till he found 1 and made me change it out at a cost of about $100. I never did figure out why the pictures???

If what you posted is true, I guess they relaxed the rules some.

  5. I happen to be talking with Nevada highway patrol. The picture is from California.. so I'd say it changes between states....

I’m aware of the cuts and what’s additive and what’s not. There’s no rule against the red thread being cut and I’d welcome he citation.

Well he was wrong and if you’d have challenged it you’d have won.
