I drive a straight piped, dual black stacks, 1998 Ford Louisville with a 3406E Cat.
It’s pretty loud and I’m already a deaf driver.
I carry ear plugs when the noise start getting harsh on the ears.
The 1987 Pete we have with a 3406B is quieter with no muffler.

The day I brought that truck home new in 1977,still muffled. Should have left it that way.
Still on 10.00-22 tube bias rubber, and round headlights back then.

The 1998 ford Louisville. Spring ride heavy haul truck.Brettj3876, FlaSwampRat, singlescrewshaker and 3 others Thank this. -
A truck that has the look of straight pipes but is quiet could very well be an emission truck with a weed burner and dummy pipes up the cab or the high dollar straight pipes that can handle the heat. Either way it will be quiet.
Side note: I’m glad tall dumb shifters never caught on where I’m from. We still cut ours down shorter.Brettj3876, MACK E-6, Tug Toy and 1 other person Thank this. -

I drove an old cabover k 100 w/ Cummins and 5 inch straights up the back man that thing sounded great..... for the first couple of months. It gets old really quick. The noise and the headache just isn't worth it.

My w900 has been straight piped for several years, it does get old running the jakes on a 2 to 4 mile grade.
It is not bad with the window up, but I like to run with it down just a little, and it is too loud, depending on what rpms you are running.Dino soar, x1Heavy, FlaSwampRat and 1 other person Thank this. -
Since the ford doesn’t have a working A/C, my windows are down.
Also the noise makes this kitty a slower truck than the 2 Pete’s we have with 3406B’s.
In town, I take it easy on the throttle. I still get looks from people that has daggers pointed at the truck.
We also have a lot of horse and buggies on our roads and have had to let off the throttle a lot to coast by them.
I’ve seen a horse bolt from a intersection I was turning at.
One of the boys in the buggy flew off the back with his chair and landed flat on the road.
He jumped up, grabbed the chair and took off running to catch up to the fleeing horse and other boys.
The previous truck I drove, a sterling with a M11 cummins with a muffler, pretty much scares most horses with just the turbo noise alone....
