I may be waaaaaaaay off base, but it seems like you didn't type 192.168.1.1 in the correct area.
Seems you're attempting to get to google or somewhere else to type it in. If this is the case, type it in the top (address bar, where you would normally type in google.com or whatever) and see if that takes you where you need to go.

actually can't get to the point that allows me to type the numbers in.heck,if so i would have it all set up and good to go.
thanks for the reply. -
This may seem a bit complicated, but it's a few places to start fiddling around if you haven't already. Don't worry about the web browser for now.
I think you said you use XP, which no longer receiving updates (security or otherwise) from what I understand, but that shouldn't effect your network connection I wouldn't think. But I could be wrong here.
Start with the command line as a few others have mentioned. I'll attach a few links to help the process and to cut down on all the typing. Using 'netstat' along with the various 'switches' will give you a good idea what is going on with the network independent of any browser. Also when/if you do have to talk to support, you will have valuable information to share with them that will help speed the process up for both parties.
--This link explains what netstat is telling you. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/commandlinereference/p/netstat-command.htm
--This link will walk you through how to implement netstat and a few other tools from the command line. Copy and past is sometimes better than trying to figure out the characters http://www.maketecheasier.com/fix-network-problems-in-windows-7/ I know this is for windows 7, but from the command line, the same steps will be taken.
Someone already mentioned it before, but using another browser such as google chrome/chromium, opera, firefox, etc can be an asset for times when you think the browser itself is the problem. These can be easily downloaded from their website without any technical knowledge.x#1 Thanks this. -
Not quite yet. April 8, 2014. Expect a whole bunch of new exploits to hit the net on the 9th. Given that your typical cash register and ATM is running XP Embedded, it will be a very interesting time, indeed.
-
Totally did not know that cash registers and ATM's ran on that platform. If anything, I figured it would be run on a unix based system due to the security that it provides over the alternative. Very interesting though. I'm sure the black hat hacker's mind is going crazy with the new window of opportunity coming up.
-
XP is the #2 Windows platform, behind 7. However, remember that most registers and ATMs are hidden behind a hardware firewall and connect through a VPN. Their exposure risk is very low.
crb Thanks this. -
True. Hardware firewalls can be monsters to break into without physical access. But VPN's are networked to secure servers. Most servers, from what I understand, run on a UNIX platform and or linux (pretty close to synonymous). I just figured something with that kind of value would choose the lesser of the security risks.
