Anybody know if someone makes a locker type box for chains that goes up by the landing gear on a stepdeck? I can picture what I'm looking for but have never seen it.

A customer’s trailer I pull has these ones under a stepdeck.
Seems very nice.
Kyle G. and Brettj3876 Thank this. -
I'm looking for something that hangs vertically by the landing gear. Want headache rack type storage but on the trailer. Chains laying in horizontal boxes always seem to end up against the door latches and generally being a pain in the ###.Oxbow Thanks this.

Shawn posts a good point to start. Honestly, I've thought of what you have, but have never seen one made specifically for it. I know I've seen tire holders stuffed in between the landing gear on the step deck, but never a real tool box. The tire bay that was installed was kind of used as a makeshift tool holder that DOT would love to bust.
Your best bet would be to size up what size box you can fit in there. Then check how you want to mount it. Maybe those mounts that they use for truck frame rails that hold APU's, steps and tool box frames if that kind of mounting system will work in there. You don't want to drill in the beam frame and risk weakening the strength of the beams. The cross support members would be the better option if needing to drill some kind of frame holder onto the cross section supports. Then set up the box to mount on there. It'll be dirty, filthy, exposed to all sorts of road damage possibilities, but it's doable if you're determined enough.
Incidentally, I do recall seeing one trailer that had that kind of chain holding setup like the headache rack, but I can't seem to find it or recall the name. I believe it was an aluminum trailer, too.
Good luck.Kyle G. Thanks this. -
Here's a link to one I just found that might do what you want and it would have to bolt on to the support brackets that you could extend from the built-in cross supports. Still looking because I know I've seen what I mentioned before but here's another option.

In here there's other links to similar ideas, but I don't have a pinterest account either, but I did find it to give you an idea. If you only want to hang chains, put a couple on the trailer that would be on the headache rack instead and a catch with a top restraint to keep them from coming out. -
Found one, just want you want, but I think it's part of the trailer as manufacturer option.

Of course this is probably for a gooseneck, but the concept is still valid and possibly doable with a little hillbilly engineering.
Kyle G. Thanks this. -
Incidentally, the one's I remember seeing, may have just been headache rack chain hangers and box, but mounted on both sides of the aluminum trailer wall behind the landing gear, if this aging memory is somewhat intact.

I've seen one with the old wedge shape sort of chain box between the landing gear, I'm too fat and clumsy to be crawling around under there. Thinking like an 18 inch wide, 18 deep, and 40 inch tall vertical box. Maybe gonna need to make a trip to Brunner down in Joplin to get what I want custom built.CAXPT Thanks this.

I had an Alutrec stepdeck trailer that had boxes mounted by the landing gear to store chains. Maybe 30" vertical 12"x12". They might have been made by Alutrec not sure. Manac owns them now.
CAXPT and Rubber duck kw Thank this. -
Yeah, I've got a nice new Mac on order hillbilly engineering, no matter how much I may like it, is what I'm trying to avoid having to do here.
