What the title says, I see A Lot of flatbeds with the cargo straps outside the rub rail. Is this legal? Basically I'm saying wtf?

I can, with certainty, say I got stopped one time for that reason one time. I think it was in 2005. HE said, it is a violation & the straps must go inside the rail. The reason being, if someone side swipes the trailer, it may cut the straps & release the load.

It isn't illegal although DOT suggests behind the rub rail if possible. That said, Melton teaches strapping directly to the rub rail because they have winch tracks on both sides and nothing strong enough behind them to hook to.

My trailor has no rub rail. Never had DOT say anything. It's a factory western trailor 53ft 4 axles.

There's a difference between strapping over the rub rail or strapping because you have none. Because honestly, tell me how you'll strap behind the rub rail when its not there?

The qustion was it leagal or not. My point being that a trailor company is not going to massproduce traliors that are not DOT compliant.Dominick253 Thanks this.
