I'm with you.
If there's any chance of a strap getting cut or frayed, it's getting padding, cardboard, plastic edge protectors etc.
It's not just a matter of DOTs enterpertation, but if a strap fails and causes a problem with the load, now you have a bigger problem.

One of my favorite places to go shopping for padding materials is carpet stores. Well actually out back behind carpet stores. Almost always have rolls of old carpet out there.

Usually for straps I jusr use pieces of old strap doubled over. Because if I have to use strap protection i'm honking on that bar.

I'm the same way. No since in throwing and old and damaged strap away. Take a few minutes and cut it into about 16-18" strips and fold them over. Yorks great when you have to put a staple into a weird location.
Those old strap pieces are also good for covering sharp edges in tight spots when you don't want to damage your good blankets or pads.fargonaz Thanks this. -
I just cut up an old strap yesterday because I used all my felt pads on the guardrail posts I was hauling.DDlighttruck Thanks this.
