I was on I-80 in Wyoming the other day and a guy hauling a can didnt twist his straps and those thing were just a screaming. I could hear them across the median while I was going 70mph with my window shut. Lmao..
Mommas_money_maker, SHC, aiwiron and 1 other person Thank this. -
If it was I know the driver and we had loaded out of the same place, carrying same thing and he was wondering why I did the twists. I told him and he told me that I wasnt getting them tight enough LMFAO!!!

Im thinking it was a 40 ft can and must've had 10 straps or so. Sounded like a helocopter headed east!
aiwiron, Speedemon1084 and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
you see that westbound 4-wheeler towing a sailboat?Mommas_money_maker Thanks this. -
after reading all this i talked with a buddy of mine in my off road club and he is a dot officer for new york. he said alot of dot officers will give you a warning with twisted straps because it does compremise the wll. he was telling me that alot of states are going to be getting even harder on us truckers.

I've been putting a half twist in the strap on each side of my load for 32 years when the load is tall and less than the width of the trailer.
I have never had any negative feedback on this practice from any inspector.
I got this information from the 2012 CVSA Inspector Training Manual dated April 1, 2012.
2012 OOSC Changes - Part II
*7. Securement of Cargo
Tiedown Defect Table Synthetic Webbing
Justification: Clarify that twists in synthetic webbing are not defects, unless the twist is in the hardware or tensioning device. It is an industry standard to put a half turn in synthetic webbing straps to prevent vibration.

I would have to say that if putting a half twist in a strap degraded the wll that much, maybe kinedyne isn't making the straps strong enough. Or of it that big an issue, maybe the driver isn't using enough of them. I've been flatbedding for a long time, and do put a single twist in a strap if I feel its needed. Never had an issue at the scalehouse either.
Mommas_money_maker, SHC and MNdriver Thank this. -
some evidently are confused about what a twist is, lol we dont mean twist it to the shape of a rope , just a half turn. if i knew how to post a picture i would.
and the guy in that article from kinedyne has apparently never pulled a flat load, straps sometimes as tight as a guitar string will vibrate, and some shippers of insulation board REQUIRE a half twist or you dont leave with load.Last edited: May 14, 2012
