The point of most of these drivers folding the strap up is that they can JUST put the strap in the winch enough to start cranking it. Then, when they go to unstrap, kaplap - the thing just falls right out of the winch.
I don't really believe you ARE going to have a problem with this scenario unless the unthinkable happens - and then you're screwed - or more likely, the person on the receiving end of your falling load is going to be screwed.

As far as throwing straps, though I don't walk on top of the trailer to drop the hook, I do just throw the strap only over the load, not the hooked end. I have seen FAR too many times people either getting bonked in the head or getting near bonked. That hook is big and heavy enough to cause a concussion and/or serious bleeding.

I think that were all talking about the same thing it's hard to explain yourself without a picture in this case. I'm just saying (and I don't know the law by the line) if your going to hook anthing to a stake pocket I would not give that chain alot of leverage to pull on it

If you've got several or 4 wraps of strap on the winch its not going to matter if its folded over and stuck thru the slot and then winched down. Its not going to pull thru if its tightened right even in a wreck.

I always thru my straps but looked under my trailer on every one.

Just reciting the "so-called" experts in theory and math who state if enough force is applied to the strap (don't quote me, I can't speak their language, much less recite it!) in a situation where the strap is just through the winch, regardless of how many times it's wrapped around it, the strap can and probably will come off.

Trooperrat, it seems that the only way one will ever get a "definitive" answer is to experience the undesireable. To that end I will continue to "properly" thread the strap through the winch, inside the rub rail( I think it just looks better) whenever possible. I thank you for the info. and insight.

I'm cussing all the time about getting stuff that belongs on a flatbed. That stuff looks like the opposite. Belongs in a van.

Not only that, but they also have to secure any attachments as well. By law you need a minimum of 6 on a backhoe, even though 2 will hold it.

You'd be surprised at how stable some of that stuff is. That excavator wouldn't move. To tell you thet truth, I'd feel safer hauling a D-6 with not one chain on it, about a 45,000 lb machine, than flatbedding for some drilling contractor having to deal with all sorts of goofy, awkward cargo like pile driving equipment and auger bits.

I was almost hired on with a company that said they didnt do training. theyd just give me a flat and send me to the mill. How crazy is that? I have never heard some of this info and surely would have caused some accident. Im glad I didnt have a bad expirience there and also glad that i now know of that book and the other information you all provided.

95 N to 495 N ramp about 6 years ago, a driver rolled over with a full load of hay, it was a 13 ft load, we were called to help because we were garaged right down the street, there was no time to wait for wreckers because the state police had the patriots bus comming through with the team returning from a game, (away) so they told us to right the dang thing no matter what it takes, I was in a 966 B and a stste worker was in another loader and we took the buckets and tilted the whole truck back on its rubber, here is my point, the load was fine, not one bail fell off, we were stunned, the whole load was portables, and all of them were strap through and rolled over,, I always strapped through to the point of no slack and winched everything all together, since then,, and if You were wondering, Yes we re primed the pump on the tractor and it drove away from the scene under its own power,, missing mirrors and all.
