Mud isn't as bad as you'd think it is. Roll it up and leave it out on the winch. It'll dry up and fall off as dust when you pull it out again.

I like throwing my straps directly on the load and following up with the tarp.

Yep..under the tarp.
When you pull the bungies tight enough you shouln't have any trouble.
I will from time to time run a strap across the ends..depending on what I'm hauling. -
not to be a spoiler but anyone can get a computer and tell you D.O.T. state or Fed says or does not say ~ about anything on anything - and after reading written test questions I consider whether it is good for that load to be senior to whether D.O.T. has a reg on it but for Chris' sake go look it up if you can on the D.O.T. which has jurisdiction - it does not matter what someone says, the only thing that matters is what the law says -

for the 1st time i had to put my straps on the outside of the load dow chemical in IL was asked if i had edge protection/8 ft drop tarps...yes...ok tarp 1st then strap req by customer cant wait til i drop this in houston hate having them on the outside
