(I know OP posted this a while ago, but I'll leave this for anybody researching Werner.)

I can't speak for other companies, but trainer status at Werner is not something that is earned, it is something that is handed out on a silver platter. It is very possible that your trainer will only have a little more experience and even less knowledge than you do. Take everything your trainer tells you with a grain of salt until you've verified it with an official source of some kind. That usually means DoT and/or state agencies for legal issues, company resources for company policy issues, but NOT company resources for legal issues. The company documentation is usually reliable, but there's too many people throughout the company who aren't.

If your trainer tries to pressure you to do things that are very illegal or dangerous, burn him with both DoT and safety. Know your stuff, try to stick to things that are provable (eg. log violations, repeatedly speeding through the same long stretches of road), be very detailed, don't make stuff up, don't get into a pissing contest with him, and don't let him think you are burning him or else he'll fabricate something to make it look like you're the problem and not him.

Although, if it's small stuff, it might be worth overlooking just for the sake of getting out of training quickly. I say that because trucking is a fairly corrupt and incompetent industry when it comes to anything beyond maximizing the bottom line. So if you end up with a trainer who bathes and whose driving doesn't scare the hell out of you, it's very possible that's as good as you're going to find without risking your job or putting up with a bunch of nonsense to finally land a trainer who is fully competent.

Some of Werner's trainers probably do have some integrity and actually know what they are doing (they can't all be incompetent... I hope), but that's due to their individual effort and not down to Werner having a legitimate vetting process. On the other hand, it's simply not possible for my trainers to have been so incompetent unless Werner's vetting process was a complete joke. Don't be surprised if you find out that many of the seemingly unbelievable horror stories about Werner's trainers are not exaggerated in the slightest bit.

That said, the consensus seems to be that's the way things work at most, if not all, of the training companies. So try to work within the system and stick around until you have the experience to go elsewhere. Just don't risk your or anyone else's life to do it.
