If they were paying him 90% and getting him good loads and paying weekly while waiting on the money and taking care of a lot of other paperwork how will that get him broke and in the poor house? They were doing a lot for only taking 10%. Better to have them as an ally than an enemy. They could have grounds to sue if you back solicit their customers, how much would that cost you? And on top of that I don't believe in dirty trucking. And I am not broke or in the poor house. Don't screw me and I won't screw you. By his own account they treated him good and he was doing well. What comes around goes around.
rollin coal and RedForeman Thank this. -
My reference to 'fair" was meant as in cutting rates, snatching a load from someone just for fuel money so you can get home. Happens everyday.

Same situationwith me sorta, I started a business with one truck hired a driver and dideverything for the driver from home and I made about $2000 profit per month and paid the driver .40cents pm, long story short the driver left bought her own truck and wanted todo container work locally, so I decided to drive again for a while and build up some revenue and try hiring again in April, anyway I do allthe stuff youre talking about from my truck. I havea laptop, mobile hotspot, mobile printer and mobile scanner and have no problemsat all with it, I too fill out packets every couple days but with the mobileequipment it makes it fun to do...bonus with the hotspot too I can watchnetflix anytime I want. Im set up on the cloud so Im able to access my homefiles while on the road... use technology to make it fun and easy.
Dont stress just go make as much money as you can, get a laptop, mobileprinter scanner at BestBuy it'll cost less than $800 for all of that and if youhave a smart phone Android you probably already have hotspot on your phone justgo to settings and turn it on (iphone doesnt have it for T-mobil)
I dont run for anything less than $1.75 pm and I averagein a month $2.10 pm doing dry van work in the Northwest... focus on one laneand build from there, chose lanes you like or whats the point in being yourown boss right, have fun do it your way, somedays I only work two days doing local work, like 25 mile runs that pay $400 so when I see them I do them thats all profit and no fuel, dont look for the really long runs they dont pay much for those, look for day trips and learn to find work to places that have work to get you out again.

grossing $209,000 only left you with $28k and some change in profit for the entire year? wow.. are these pretty typical numbers for otr o/o's? that is pretty shocking to me. no offense to OP, i hope things pick up for you now. i just wouldn't have imagined that's all you get to pocket after grossing over 200k. come to the oilfield....

if that 10 per cent your lease company was keeping included liability ins, cargo, and factoring, that not a bad deal at all.
see you simply looked at the gross of all the loads you pulled and saw out of 209,000 , they got 20,900 leaving you with 188, 000. you simply saw 20,000 and thought , they didn't do nothing but answer the phone for that money.
you have come to find that they were earning a good portion of that 20 grand. you speak of some factoring companies charging 5 percent, that woud mean only a 5 per cent difference to you .
at 10 per cent they aint cleaning your clock by any means.
I would see if I could get my 3 grand back and think this thing thru a while while longer, at least til spring.
I would also check your expenses across the board, you got a hole in the bucket somewhere besides that 10 per cent. how many miles did yu run on the pseed ometer to make that 209,000? that's the more important question -
I may have to start a separate thread for this, but I don't understand how you guys do all this from your truck without having someone in an office help you, especially when you are first starting.
I know that you can set alerts for loadboards, but you can't monitor them constantly, like someone in an office can, not to mention if they actually have any connections.
You drive all day, look for loads, send carrier packets, check brokers' credit scores, make call after call to negotiate, do the billing... and in my case, work on the truck when you are done for the day or week.
Having been involved in other businesses, I have learned that sometimes it is better to define what your job exactly is, and pay someone to do the other stuff. It is too easy for someone that wants to do everything to be sucked into a 24/7 work schedule.
Also, it seems like this business is really a question of who are you going to give your money to. It's going to go to someone. Do you give 25 % and pull soene's trailer and have them dispatch you? Do you give it to the insurance co. in getting your authority? To a dispatching/ bookkeeping/ billing service?
I don't see how you do all this without having at least a spouse to help, although (no offense to the ladies), but 10% is probably much cheaper than a wife, lol. -

No hole in bucket, operating ratio of 90% + is very common in trucking.

post number 9 on the link to his BlogSpot, there you will find he is paying basically 10 per cent for operating authority only, as he has listed pay cargo . liability , bobtail, and the accident policy. he also has 2300 buck truck payment and 757.00 trailer payment.
with all that he is better off doing his own authority, frankly with that deal he should lease on at 75 per cent he would do better
