These radios are pretty pricey aren't they?

    Are they worth it?

Go to Bells CB in Ft. Lauderdale and have Screwdriver work his magic on it. He's a good guy. Worth the trip. He has numerous videos on YouTube, here's one of his 955 tune up reports.

Yes they are SMT and I would have a professional do the work its just a matter of removing a resistor but unless you have a fine tip solder gun with experience leave it to someone else. I have the 655 and absolutely love it. The reciever is a bit noisey but backoff the RF gain a touch and all is good. The audio is topshelf my galaxys,General lee have taken a back seat.

I'm glad to here good things about it. I purchased the radio because a bud of mines has a 497 and man he sounds real clear. Plus is time to retired my old connex.

Aside from getting the CB conversion done and having the receiver performance peaked at 27 MHz, I wouldn't fool with the innards. The radios are pretty broadbanded by design, and allowing them to receive over such a wide range invariably reduced the efficiency of the fairly narrow range of frequencies you need it to work on. You can sorta think of it as taking a shotgun, narrowing down the barrel with an extremely tight choke, then firing a sabot round through it. All the same initial power, but concentrated right where you need it instead all over the two bystanders, the pawn shop sign overhead, and the pull box on the pole for the fire department. :)

The AM adjustments diverge widely from the SSB adjustments, and having someone just "tune for maximum smoke" will sacrifice many of the features that make the Strykers, as a group, nice radios.

Good luck with the rig; oughta sound nice.

Took the radio to bells CB today and did the conversion and tune, The radio is stunning. But for anyone interesting in buying a stryker , If you are only going to use it in AM setting or you are a bit old school,Just get the stryker 655 and converted and tune it. Save the money, The 955 is a great radio but more for bragging rights and SSB use (rarely going to use). Both are built tough so you are paying for a great product.

The folks at Bell Cb are easy and informative to work with and highly recommend them.

I agree on the "save $ unless you plan to use the SSB".
