Just a little rant...
Well, I have been running own authorities for over 2 years now. Plan was to own a little fleet and have regular work. My father has been in the business for many years and he had trucks leased on to other companies up to 5. We now have only 1 truck on the road and I have to do everything from finding loads to deliveries and all the back office work.
I cannot get myself to add another truck and have a driver on. Reasons that are restricting me:
1. Almost every trucking company is hiring and I do not have anything better to offer other than pay.
2. The drivers will cost me a lot as an employee, which the drivers do not really want and competitors are still offering the Driver Inc program.
3. I want a experienced driver with who will not cause me trouble because now its my own authorities on the line.
4. The fact that insurance is very hard to get, I dont want any citations.
Once I start growing, my father will take some load and he is able to do local deliveries and pickups. I however, do not have a dispatcher. I started doing LTL as well and TL and have some regular business.
I would really like to add trucks because my main market is Toronto to Montreal, and with the ELD being introduced in the new year, I expect rates/ freight to really increase. I doubt truckers will be able to do rounders before their 14 expire?
Anyone else face this issue, how did you get through it?

what difference does the ELD implementation bring in the trucking industry?
-
Because the ELD restricts driver productivity.
-
Seems like either you get good drivers that want top pay and benefits which I don't blame them a bit for, or you get the drivers that cost about more than they make. The guys in between own a truck.
-
Will it affect the driver pay?dunchues Thanks this.
-
If it affects productivity, it affects pay.

How ??? The HOS are still the same .All an ELD does is keep you honest.Phantom Trucker and upnorthwpg Thank this.

Out west, in the summer you start in the Vancouver area and take a load to Edmonton. That's usually a 12 to 12.5 hour trip, not counting pre and post and fuel and a few stops along the way for brake checks. So you could easily max yourself out just doing all the unpaid stuff. Then add multiple highway stops for construction. ELD will wipe out a lot of BC to Alberta runs. Now, in the winter, then you might as well give up, because the runs can be an extra 1 to 3 hours to your trip for slowdowns, chaining etc. And multiple times per year each route is shut down, and sometimes all 3 at once. So any time during the year sometimes you'll have to find a place to shutdown en-route before you get to Alberta. Good luck, there's not many places at all. And the two day rounder could become a 3 day rounder. Two runs per week instead of 3. Your take home just got 33% smaller. ELDs are government desk jockey's idea. They don't work in the real world.
mitrucker Thanks this. -
On the east end, with the ELD next year, this problem will be faced by a lot of drivers doing same dsy rounders to Montreal. You will def wont be able to be home before the 14 expires. I guess it will increase work and rate.Canucklehead Thanks this.

But ELDs are the immigrant company's dream. Team team and more team. If you look at the driver ads in BC, 90% are team already.
