I hear a lot of drivers just drop off and hook up to another trailer and not much backing. I bet backing one up takes a lot of skill. I did see the YouTube video, very good driver.

:| i had to back a double 100 metres to get my licence. can't say it was terribly straight backing, but i did it. just gotta go slow and steady. if it worries you, go find a big open space and just practice backing.

Trains and Joints are just another part of trucking. If your not sure always leave enough room to escape or break up. Pay attention to what your doing when working the trailers. There are more connections, ect. Easy on the corners and load heavy to the front.

Been pulling doubles for a year line haul with FedEx and only had to break a set down once. Ended up on a dead end road right beside a terminal, about 300 metres to back up and no way I can do that. Anyway only took about 15 min to get sorted. My own fault for not being more observent. I prefer pulling doubles, turn a lot tighter than one trailer.

The doubles I find interesting are the two 48 ft or 53 ft doubles on the New York Thruway. I guess they still run those. Haven't been over there in a few years.

I've only seen these once but I recall seeing a set of double trailers in which you could 'lock' the two trailers together in order to back them like a single. There was a heavy bar that locked into the back of the first trailer and front of the second trailer thereby preventing them from pivoting. I'm guessing you couldn't do much maneuvering since the first trailer's tires would be dragging laterally but it would have certainly made straight backing a tandem set super-easy!

thats a turnpike set. They're legal in a few states that have controlled access tollways. NY, MA, OH, IN and maybe a couple others.

I don't think 48 or 53 foot doubles can run on the Indiana Toll Road and triples can run the toll road but I think they have to be broken back down to doubles at the Ohio line... go figure.
