Good lord, trucking is not that bad. Don't know when you're coming home, try being in the military and constantly wondering if your tour will get extended by another 6 months. That my friend sucks. Pick another company and get back in the truck. If it breaks down, well that happens. The company can't tell you when it will be fixed because they don't know, sometimes repairs take longer than expected. But if your "stunned" by the life of a trucker then you lived a very sheltered life. There is nothing "stunning" about my profession. It's how I and many others feed our kids. Every day is new adventure, I have the best office in the company and nobody is looking over my shoulder. I'll take comfort in the fact that they can't ship this job to China and no robot can do it yet. I'll listen to my music loud with my window down smoking while I work, heck a long haul trucker is all I'll ever be.
stunned...........

Comcar an cypress, or maybe hauling cans out of the port (gonna need TWIC and Jaxport card$$) for that. Obviously you did zero research on trucking before going to CDL school. BTW I moved to PA for a couple years as there are much better trucking jobs up there. Once I was established as an o/o, I moved back to Orlando.
-
O/O move to Orlando doesn't seem very insightful......LOL
Did you research that move?????? LOLtruckinmike1984 and Dinomite Thank this. -
Looks like someone did their due diligence after the fact. This was avoidable.
Scoots and truckinmike1984 Thank this. -
Here's the thing OP, you need to make decision... There is plenty of stuff you can do with a CDL A so long as you keep a good record. Most of the guys I went to school with don't do OTR... some drive a bus, some got into construction, some work at warehouses. I drove a taxi myself before I got into this. I think you need perspective.
When I started out, I started with a mega like you. I worked there for eight months... I barely made bills and the sad part is my house is paid off. That said I just looked at it like doing time to get where I wanted to be. WERNER is a special kind of fail... the ONLY worse choice you could have made would be leasing for CR England. Werner is well known for their conartistry- true masters of the art of BS. There are better choices, even Swift... not suggesting you apply there either as they also suck. The whole point is to get six months then start sending out apps to places you want to work. I was on pace to make $33k with my first company (a mega) and it sucked (out 3 weeks at a time, no rest, never saw family, always something wrong). I jumped ship ASAP. I put in 8 months there and got hired by a good company... $1200-$1500/wk AND home every weekend. Your family needs actual money. It takes about three weeks pay for those guys who said screw OTR to make what I make in one... So what's the point?
The point is simple. You're going to take a big bite of the old sh/t sandwich starting out because megas know you are using them just like they are using you. They don't give a #### whether or not you ever get home. You are expendable, there's another sucker waiting in line. They will try to pin crap on you so you can't go elsewhere so its important to keep your record spotless.
Do like I did and you'll make it through:
HOW TO BEAT A MEGA:
1. Never complain- even when you are treated like crap... They will only screw with you more.
2. Don't take it seriously- screw bottom feeders and their cheap freight. Being on time and breaking the law will only screw your future prospects. If you're out of hours go to sleep. They can't make you break the law. If they fire you, you can sue them. They know this...
3. Never mistake a paycheck for loyalty- they don't. Remember you are a slave.
4. Always be planning your escape- G.T.F.O.A.S.A.P. Around the 8 month mark decent companies will hire you.
5. Don't telegraph your punch- make sure you get back to the terminal and turn in your keys- this way they can't say you abandoned the truck... If dealing with slimeballs like Werner it may be a good idea to have your attorney present (do this after you are hired elsewhere). Feel free to laugh in their face. It feels good.
There are a lot of decent companies to work for, just gotta pay your dues. OTR experience will get you hired almost anywhere because the good companies know most people don't make it through the bad companies. They are looking to hire the survivors.nofilter, ONESHOT1997, EZX1100 and 12 others Thank this. -
Oh yeah. I've been back over decade and doing great. I only spent 100 nights in the truck last year too. Gotta find a niche market if you want to be like fortycalglock.harlycharly55 Thanks this.
-
I deadhead out of Orlando 2 or 3 times a week. That's my niche.nofilter Thanks this.
-
If it works numbers wise, great. I deadhead to S FLA all the time too. I love to deadhead.nofilter Thanks this.

Oh I know I didnt research one bit. AS a matter of fact I wasnt making any money driving cab sure I was paying my lease but take home money there wasnt any I thought I was doing something wrong come to find out you hav eto know the dispatchers and that takes a long time .They feed you the good runs the rest get scrap jobs .
Any way I went to RD Masters Jacksonville fl, open house on friday, turned in my keys on sunday, was sitting in Truck driving school on Monday .Signed up for werner, wednesday, graduated friday, went to lakeland florida on sunday after noon .
Was in oreintation on Monday morning .Finish oreintation, got in a rental car to Texas, got to texas, got in my room. Trainer called ..got my bags and left that afternoon with trainer.
HEY I JUST WANTED MY CDL A ...thought it would open the doors to a good driving job.
Then you find some how you entered a new matrix of liars cheats and scoudrels...just to get a job driving a truck. waiting in a terminal you hear all the disgruntaled drivers mumbling and rumbling about the troubles they are having ......its like a homelss job with pay .
Believe me I f I was young single no place to live no car it would be a PERFECT JOB just take the crap as it comes , live in your truck direct deposite money in your bank .
No expenses but you and your needs on the road and banking what is left over A PERFECT SINGLE GUY JOB .Never wondering what to do today just drive and drive all over the country.
But with wife and family you can not just drive and drive and not be concerned about what is back home bills, relationships and life your missing at home. You need to be two places at once most of the time and your shackled to a truck on the road or in a truck stop.
No one said "hey get your CDL A ..then you have to be shackled to OTR life for 6months to a year .Then you can start looking for a job thats local driving .
Its a BIG SECRET till you have put your foot forward down the rabbit hole.
Work for us, you can be gone from your family for 14 days, get a few hrs off at home and go back out again. ( oh thank you ...thats sounds like a great deal ....sign me up)
They force people to team and drive otr ..this day and age, they should pay you for driving, not by mile and let trucks go , a daily distance .
That doesnt keep drivers out endlessly . Be home like a normal job .
This long haul makes no sense when you could tag team the loads, if you pay drivers a wage for driving, and not by the mile.
That is just my opinion , this endless ribbon of highway, that never ends that has drivers falling a sleep at the wheel ,turning their trucks over , crashing in traffic, drivers gone missing .familys with no man around the house .
It is not the service. Not the branch of the military its a job just a job driving truck. Why is this industry so OLD in its ways ,Ideas.
Turn over is high extremely high . But the mill keeps churning out CDL A students unaware they are about to join a homeless life style , and all the responsibility is on your shoulders when something goes wrong ...its all you .
Im glad you were in the Marines as it takes all that training you had in the military to sit back and enjoy a cigarete ,turn up your music and roll the windows down, in your office. You deserve it ...you have earned it .
The trucking industry needa mega change .....I now warn my kids and wife watch out around truckers that poor guy is hungry, tired, over worked and underpaid . Give him lots of space.
