I had a friend that was turning wrenches and was making good money, he bought a truck and gave up turning wrenches, only because he got tired of looking like a grease monkey. He did so well on turning wrenches that I believe he is semi retired and drives his truck part time just to get by.

Employing a driver and paying for all that is required when you have employees. Between pay, benefits and workmans comp nothing else even comes close to its expense. Fuel is a distant 2nd.

Sometimes buying from Mechanics can be a nightmare. I go through the same process with every truck, and have had mechanic/sales people argue with me about my purchasing process so I just walk away. Some think we are dumb so I don't deal with these types at all.

Some think drivers are dumb that is correct. personally I take the job I do on a truck like its my responsibility that the truck is safe to drive. my father drove his whole life and I was always afraid of the thought he might not come back. so when I work on a truck its kinda like making sure I know that a truck should perform like it should and like its designed if not better. I get vary irritated when I run into fleets or owner ops. that operate with trucks that shouldn't be on the road.actually thats one of the reasons I was looking at owning trucks instead of twisting wrenches on other people's.

A friend of mine once owned a small trash hauling business. He told me the reason he made a good living while other small operators struggled was because he could fix his own equipment. I could work part-time if I had that skill.

I make more now, but I have given up a lot of free time. So if hobbies and fishing are important to you, I'd stick with mechanicing. But if you like to work and want the pride of doing something on your own go for it.

Maintenance, fuel, insurance, equipment payments. Those will be your most costly items.

Hiring drivers is extremely costly. So much so that they get most if not all the profits in some cases
