I spent most of 30 years in the truck, and while I'm still in the industry wearing a management/IT hat, my desire to go back in the truck is ZERO. I don't have a degree, but I do have some college in the past, and I'm admittedly not normal, but I'm making close enough to what I did when I had the truck to call it even after expenses.

^^ as long as you're happy, man. I was a telecom tech OPS2 and switchman (most people don't know what that is anymore) in the late 80's and much of the 90's before much of that became obsolete. I still was affiliated with the people I sold my Refuse (trash) route to, and got back into trucking that way; never needing a CDL, until the 20K's. Had to get "re" (ha) certified in '04 and start bottom-barrel (almost) and do my dues all over again. FedEx linehaul was nice enough to have me, LoL.
I've gotten local/regional tanking nowadays, and making more than I did at a desk, or probably ever could again. (Or would want to...)
If I get RLS in the truck, I'll get out, exercise, re-pre, and pop pinecones with a stick at a rest-stop. I've been offered going into Dispo etc etc etc. I've got a 4 year degree in IT / telecom. Still.....nope. No OTR anymore, man, but NO cubicles, either.
@TROOPER to TRUCKER ~ idea about going into security is AWESOME, its where you are and what you do. Me? I'm just gonna keep my stacks upright, and my long-nose forward. Passion and play are on the same plate at this point in my life. *and the money speaks its own language if you love what you do!*
I drove by the house today, only for a few "honks" and all the kids' friends ran from one street to the next to see who could hear me better and see me closer. I'm home daily (work nights,) and am content with where I'm at.
    Good thread, y'all~ thanks!
    Right, @Straight Stacks ???
and you too, @pattyj ?? (not picking on you; sorry you took it thata way!)

Just a thought, there are probably a lot more folks that have successfully left than you will get replies from on this forum. So, if you don't get many posts from those folks, it's probably because they aren't on the forum because they are no longer in trucking. Just sayin..

As for me, I contemplate getting out of my current occupation and into trucking. But, in 2 years I can 'retire' and then go do something else (I'll be too young to quit working outright). So, if things work out, I may start in a couple of years. We'll see

Don't really see too many of them out in public, but they probably are there. It would be nice to know of some current nurse, or engineer, or even a sail-boat racer that drove trucks as a previous career. A nice example I read about from time to time is director James Cameron. He apparently drove trucks while getting his screen-writing off the ground. Then of course there's that one actor Donal Logue who got his CDL later in life and also owns a trucking company in Oregon some place.

    IMDB is the time burner!!

James Cameron was a school bus driver.

It's never too late to better yourself. When I lived in San Diego, my roommate was from Brazil, he was working as a cable guy, had no idea how the school system worked here and thought he needed a lot of money.

I took him down to the community college and got him enrolled for free (BOG waiver). He transfered to UCSD (one of the hardest universities to get into in the US) and graduated with a BS in electrical engineering.

I think people are their worst enemies, they lack patience for success in the long run, they think they'll fail before they try. They're afraid of commitment. They don't want to put in hard work and want everything handed to them and right now.

I'll admit I'm one of them
