My problem with fruit is more to do with people who are already insulin resistant being told that fruit is their best friend. I try to follow paleo eating principles as much as possible, therefore I stay away from high sugar fruits my belief being we did not eat modern fruit in our past, note I say modern fruits which have a far different macro nutrient profile than we ate in the past.

I highly highly recommend calisthenics as a form of exercise. I'm 41 at 38 had a small gut and couldn't handle things in the bedroom, this was my wakeup call. Yes mainly diet was the weight loss, but my frame and body composition started changing slowly, very slow. It now provides me with almost circus like stunts, hormonal things I know changed (women think im on test who have known me, I take nothing) and years of just dieting alone never did this. It was the forging of a new body, I'm physically stronger than ever, I know guys in their 60s that can put me to shame because of persistent progressive calisthenics. I won't bore you with my tricks but how many times have you seen a 200 pound man at a truckstop flip to his hands and start doing handstand pushups, on a wall it took many small baby steps to progress to this, soon I won't need the wall.
Anyway just the mobility you retain and gain from this alone is worth it, and care should be taken. It's what physical therapists use to heal and strengthen patients after injury, think about it. That's one thing that doctors do advise that isn't bs.
As far as the salt goes I've read some material on this and am keeping an open mind. I've changed my stance many times, but like everything even book authors can pitch bs. Right now the gut flora thing has been getting popular, I'm just going with what works and occasionally I'll try new methods.
I'm of the belief that cycling on/off (I cycle carb amounts) foods even exercise was the biggest positive of everything I have learned so far. There is something to it, plateaus end from past over done methods of failure.Last edited: Mar 1, 2015
Lepton1, Irishtrucker and Dr_Fandango44 Thank this. -
Yikes IT, now you've twisted my curiosity. What in the world is a modern fruit and is there such a thing as an old fashioned fruit? I've eaten more than my fair share of fresh fruits in my time so you intrigue me.
Nevertheless though fresh is better and more nutritious than canned.
What do you deem as high sugar fruits?
ThanksIrishtrucker Thanks this. -
Your Modern apple, pineapple ect as compared to fruit our bodies evolved to tolerate, modern fruits have been crossbred for a long time to produce sweeter products i.e. more sugar content. I think your modern apple has 20g of sugar in it. I suggest that many people lump all fruit in the healthy category regardless of their personal medical issues and if its fibre your looking for there are many ways to get it without all that sugar.

I have had some very strange looks doing Kettlebell swings and push ups at rest stopsfairshake Thanks this.

Ok so there's a case for some fruits to be crossbred as opposed to the latest controversy surrounding GMOs...I'm a big pineapple eater especially the ones from Costa Rica. But I contend that fresh fruits and their so called sugar content behaves totally differently in the body's digestion than raw sugar.
you have to take into consideration the added nutrients and fiber. You eat an apple and you're going to feel full. Eat a tablespoon of sugar and there's no body to it. If anything sugar is much more addictive. I know because it took me a year to kick the habit.
Obesity and diabetes 2 in this country are caused in the main by just one trend. People are devouring huge amounts of carbs, mostly HFCS. I read that we have gone from 20 tsp year per person, to 150 lbs per year per person. Sugar in the old days was just a condiment taken seldom. Thus, is it any wonder that we are getting fatter with no solution on the horizon.
But in my estimation fresh fruit in a way is being made a scapegoat, unfairly.
But as usual, the debate will rage on.Irishtrucker Thanks this. -
Its a problem no doubt, it is everywhere and takes some knowledge to recognise it in its many disguised forms. I have been eating Paleo for a couple of years now and notice a major difference in my disposition and physical health without all that crap in my body.Dr_Fandango44 Thanks this.

I used to sell specialized paper bags used for hand wrapping Fuji apples, and as such got to know quite a few orchardists. They certainly gave me an education about the evolution of the apple industry, and I'm sure other fruit industries are following suit: ie. to make their product sweeter.
If anyone is old enough to remember how red delicious apples used to taste back in the early '60s you KNOW that they have changed remarkably over the last 40-50 years. What happened is that retailers started pushing the orchardists to make the apples REDDER and more consistently deep red throughout the surface of the apple. The orchardists complied by cross breeding and grafting to come up with the red delicious we know today. However, by going after that consistent deep red color something else happened to the apple: the skin got much thicker, the texture of the meat became mealy, and the skin and the first 1/4" into the meat became BITTER. After that many orchardists abandoned the red delicious altogether because the price plummeted after consumers started going to alternate varieties. Now the Fuji is the apple of choice, and makes a good alternative if you can't find organic apples because they are wrapped in paper bags as soon as they are green apples to protect them from the sun and pests.Dr_Fandango44 Thanks this. -
I've always liked Granny Smiths and Braeburn apples. I like them tart, not just sweet.
in the UK we even had a special baking apple for pies, called the Bramley. It was bigger than the reg Apple, but was very sour. That Apple could well have been cross bred.
Was it Mendel that pioneered cross breeding ??
now I'm reading that some company has produced the first GMO Apple.
called the Arctic Golden.
It won't go brown when exposed to the air.
I don't like people/companies fooling with our foods.
I think it's dangerous and we don't know the long term effects. Most of Europe has banned GMOs
Thats why HFCS is deadly because it's a GMO product.
Because of it, the next epidemic illness I've been studying is Non alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Just as lethal as diabetes.
The Paleo diet is an excellent choice, but alas, I like my dairy too much especially those luscious cheeses I can't resist.
Cheese with fresh apple......nice! -
From the UK myself, Belfast and remember Bramleys in my grannys apple pies.
I tried to do LCHF with dairy but although I was in Ketosis and felt very good I didn't lose any weight, unfortunately I have to cut it out to lose weight. Love my bulletproof coffee in the morning.Dr_Fandango44 Thanks this.
