An yes they have rules. Your just like everyone else renting a spot. Park, enjoy nature. To hot? Hang outside. To cold? start a fire. Nobody is going to bother you. Or kidnap you. Or Murder you. Well, probably not. I never got kidnaped or murdered. Nor have I ever kidnaped or murdered anyone. I have been bothered and bothered others though. I freely admit this. People can be friendly/bothersome when your camping. Sometimes, I just want to be alone, and enjoy my beer and a fire.
If you don't have a tent, buy one. Can get a decent one for under a 100 bucks. Folded up their nice and compact. An their fast to set up these days. The cheap stuff will keep you dry, sleeping bag will keep you warm.
Anyhow, good luck!

Hope it helps. Some pretty nice state parks and campgrounds out there.
Sirscrapntruckalot - Protip : setup tent first, then drink. If you drink first this can be the result..
