The current eaton "super 40" is a DT 40-170 I believe. The current 46K is a DT46-170. They are identical other than the housing thickness and the 50 lb weight difference. They both have a 18inch ring gear as opposed to a regular 40 K rear which has a 15 inch ring gear. So to answer your question, a regular 40 is not interchangeable. There is also an oddball in productin right now called a DSH 40 which is not interchangable with anything else. It has a 16 inch ring gear,I believe, and a huge pinion like a 46K

I dont know about newer models, but i have a set of "super" 40's in a 2000 pete with a c-16 spinning them.
Only weak spot on the whole truck, they break axles quite easiliy and with no warning. I have replaced every one of them probablly twice by now, and I always have a few new axles in stock ready to go in because its such an issue.
Waiting for the right set of 46's to come along so I can ditch the super 40's.
