Eh, you'd be surprised. A lot of the onus goes on to the ocean carriers when they have the freight, port terminals when they have the freight, etc, etc. You'd be surprised how little liability a forwarder really has- and all of this is pre negotiated with what are called "Incoterms" - who has what responsibility with the freight and associated payments.

Further, a lot of the bigger multinational corporations have massive insurance policies, and they don't require the freight to be insured when it is in transit, as it is fully insured under their massive umbrella policy.

Also- I will say I am a little surprised with the salaries of the specialized drivers. Taking a look at job boards, specialty heavy haul companies are offering drivers pulling 10/13/19 axles in the $80k-$100k range. I was assuming this was closer to $150k-$175k due to the expertise required. Could be a little lower due to the fact that they may only get to pull 1 or 2 loads a month depending on the situation.

That’s because of how messed up trucking is as a whole and they can get away with it . 80–100k is still considered top pay for the industry

I’ve move a lot of kuehne+nagel stuff off of east coast ports. Nothing this size, but large stuff. I love their freight it’s always interesting and pays well. I get it through a broker so it’s not directly with them.

You were assuming that the pay would be closer to $150k - $175k for pulling 10/13/19 axles... Using annual earnings numbers like that, what is the right number in your mind, for someone driving a company tractor, pulling a van trailer? Just curious...

I'm well aware that driver pay is miles away from where it should be (no pun intended). The time away from home, expertise required, and something that quite honestly doesn't get enough attention- the risks/ dangers in pulling 80k lb of product...make me believe driver salaries should at least be doubled. Pretty sure average van driver pay is in the $55-65k range? I know outfits like Walmart pay around $75-80k? Those are harder to come by though. Average salary in the US for all jobs is right around $47k per a quick search, so drivers are well above this range, but still...in my opinion it isn't where it needs to be.

That might be average but to lure good help you’ll probably have to pay above average. Without being established you might have a hard sell. They say good drivers aren’t looking for a job.
I would think the 47K number is all jobs minimum wage included. Skilled trades are much higher, or should be.
