I passed a spread axle flatbed the other day that had dual tires on the front axle and super singles on the rear axle. Anyone want to guess as to why this set up would be preferred?

Oh man !!!! Can I side with you on this one !! Snow/Rain/Sunshine...all is good. Even having to chain is much easier, even under max law.
BUT! Coming off an iced over mountain grossing about 78k....JEEZUS !!! But then again, a lot of folks were having trouble where I was. But, I sure needed a roll of butt ribbon that night!
Needless to say....I parked once I got off the mountian. -
2000 Volvo w/Cummins N-14 475hp. Pull 53' dry box and reefers. Average gross weight is 70-75k.

I currently have them on company truck, Mich X-Ones, drives and steers, KNOCK on WOOD, driven 290,000 on drives, still have 3/32 left, never got stuck in snow, drive northwest (not by choice, just seems that way) during winter, handle great in rain, never had a blow out yet.
saw presentation on tires, sidewall isn't supposed to collapse on blow out, wheel will actually ride on side wall when flattened. So far all I can say is I like them.

I wonder how much weight you could save retrofitting a truck with super singles on alum wheels compared to regular duals on steel wheels?
-
I love mine i have put 30,000 miles on mine so far. My buddy runs them he hauls tankers what i see is on his truck he weares out the inside edge of the tire but my truck hasnt yet! maybe he has a bent axle? Also im looking for one more 245/50 if anyone has one for sale

For the record THIS is a Super Single... the tires the fleets are switching to are called 'wide base singles'... big difference.
-
No tire shop i been it calls them that but i know what ya mean
-
The manufacturers call them 'wide base singles'... good enough for me.
Of course michelin calls 'em X-One's.... -
On our tractor trailers it saves 800 lbs. Partially depends on the tires selected. But after 2 years our company has pulled them off all OTR fleet and most of the local fleet. They claim there not worth the aggravation, But do deal with extremes most do not, lots of off highway work, lots of desert, high temp work.
Alot of the problem is it is hard to get them replaced on the side of the road. Also with duals you can limp it in to a tire shop.
