The Eaton manuals say to always pre select.

The manual is very clear to and gives me a lot better understanding of the super 10. On a side note I do like how it shifts on it's own in the final gear I love a manual but it's pretty cool when it just up and does it on it's own.

This video may help also. Pay particular attention to the part where it says that you need to learn how to drive YOUR truck. They're all a little different.

Personally, I never use the clutch after starting out. And I don't even use the clutch to start, if I'm on a downgrade.

The only transmissions I "pre-selected" was the air 4x4, and the old Mack air shift Super 10's. You can pre-select, I'm sure millions of transmissions are shifted that way, it's just, if you pre-select, I've found, if you miss the next main gear for whatever reason, with the pre-select spinning away, you'll never get into gear, unless you grind the heck out of it. In over 3 million miles, I never ruined a transmission, not once.

I do it the same way. Shift to neutral and button while I go into gear.

    Carguy94 and 201 Thank this.

But what do we know, we are just a bunch of old veteran drivers that can’t keep up with the know it all newbies ;) . I been driving since 1979...... and never pre selected and never broken a transmission. “Ain’t I special” :p:D

Bean Jr., Carguy94 and 201 Thank this.

What, what, what, we still talkin' about this? Get going, you'll learn on the way ( a boss would say)
