They have good food at Tamarack in Beckley. Walk up the steps from the big travel plaza at the back of the lot. There is a cafateria type restaurant that is managed by the Greenbrier resort. Cut above truck stop food.

Any Superior drivers on here run out of the Decatur Illinois Terminal and know if it’s a good terminal to work out of.

I believe Decatur is a Carry Transit terminal, our food grade division. Superior has a Kankakee terminal.

Your right I just realized that when I went back and looked at the job posting, that’s strange though the job is posted on Superiors site, the company’s must be connected .

    Hey Patty,
I really enjoyed reading your thread. It gave me more perspective toward my interest with Superior and trucking. I'm a 26y/o guy, live 30 minutes W from Markham,IL and heavily considering a career with a CDL. I've been reading about their training program for new graduates, but my overall concern is- can you start as a local tanker with them or do you HAVE to work toward that? I'm not a picky person, I wouldn't mind Regional or even OTR, but my fiance' isn't in the greatest of health unfortunately, so its important I make it back to her every night or morning. If you have any insight you could offer within your spare time, that would be great and helpful!
    Thank you,
    Will

    Hey Will,
It's not likely to be completely local; that's usually reserved for the Owner Operators. Most of our stuff is out and back. One of my coworkers only does one night out and back home a night and no weekends due to ailing parents. They can work around that but most of our stuff is dedicated and sends you about 300-500 miles out one way, most not able to be completed in one 11hr shift (time for loading /offloading cuts into your 14 and leaves you short).

The training is good and I'm very, very happy at Markham with my runs and pay. I used to work as a shipper and talked to a lot of drivers and Superior drivers were generally happy with their jobs. If you have experience there are outfits that may be me more attractive and able to suit your needs (I needed a place willing to train new drivers). Some that I remember are Altom, Brenntag, Groendyke, Heniff, McMahon, JP McMahon. I believe most of the guys I met from JP McMakon were local. If you avoid tanker, I see LTL guys like ABF, FedEx, UPS, Estes, RL, Saia, etc. running like crazy in day cabs all over the area (a lot on night shift, when I'm typically driving). I considered ABF and Estes but wanted to stick to tank work.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Best of luck find a good place to work!

    Hey Patty,
Thank you tons for the fast feedback! You've been super helpful. That's really good to know that they were lenient with your co-worker for those circumstances. Thank you for the list of different carriers too. I definitely have some more research to do and hopefully ill find something that is fitting for now before making moves toward the tanks. I'm in Joliet-Chicago area and it seems like there is plenty of work around here, glad to have lucked out there. You've been great Patty. If I have more questions, I know who to ask!

    Thanks again,
    Will
