Thank you to the Truckers Report staff for providing prospective OTR students with this excellent forum. I've lurked the forums almost obsessively over the past few months trying to soak up every bit of advice, facts, warnings, and knowledge being offered by the vets.

That being said, I've finally saved up the funds to begin seeking out training institutions. Today, prompted by the advice of someone on this forum, I went to the DMV to obtain my Motor Vehicle Record. I live in CT and they go back three years on the report. I knew I had a couple blemishes, but I wasn't sure of the ultimate recorded outcome or the exact dates.

The report indicates just one actual violations in the past three years (note: two in the past five). The violation was for failure to wear a seatbelt. I know all this sounds mighty fluffy, but obviously since I'm posting this, there is a hang up.

Now, I realize you guys are probably going to think I'm either a complete moron or simply neglectful. But the thing with this ticket is I forgot to pay it. I was assigned a court date for "failure to respond" and it just so happens I had moved and my mail wasn't forwarded so I actually missed the court date. This resulted in a "failure to appear" and a suspension of my license.

Now remember, all this had been going on while my dumb ### was unaware of it. Fast forward to early last year, there was a spot check in my town and when the officer ran my license, the suspension came up. I was cited with driving with a suspended license. I went to court and did a day of community service and that charge was thrown out.

So my MVR reads something like this:

    10/20/2009 - V - Failure to wear safety belt
11/30/2009 - Failure to Respond (court date assigned for 12/16/2009)
12/16/2009 - Failure to Appear (license suspended)
    1/4/2010 - License Reinstated

I know this may have come across as long winded and rambling, but I guess I'm just a bit apprehensive to throw down all my money on training if I may have screwed myself out of the chance to work for a company. For a ####### 45 dollar ticket. Ugh.

Anyways, I realize different carriers have different policies. But I also realize there are a lot of guys who know what they are talking about here and I just would like to know what their gut feeling would be as far as my eventual hire-ability. Thanks!

I`m not sure why you can`t call at least 5 companies and get a "feel" for your situation. Can`t hurt

It doesn't look good for ya. But call some companies anyway and see what they have to say.

OK, here's my take on this. Citation for not wearing a seat belt. Irresponsible person/driver. "forgetting" to go to court, not following up etc. Again, irresponsible driver. Company with 10 applicants, 9 of which are responsible and you, the irresponsible one. Do you have a chance of getting hired ? Well, you get my point. While it's not the end of the world (your situation), it is an obsticle to get over. It will take some determination, and explaining.

If that is all you have, ask someone in the business. You've explained it pretty well, and stuff happens.

Trucking is mostly controlled by insurance companies, if they see a problem with you, their client probably won't hire you. That is what you are up against and that may be tough, any suspension for any reason gets them looking.

There are plenty of companies that will hire you, however if you get your license suspended again don't expect to keep your job.

I would do the research on here of the companies you want to go to. Then start calling and see what they say.
