They ranged from 585 to 665 Detroit really cranked them up after the EPA hammered them with that consent decree. MPG was 6 in the regular fleet we normally were getting 7 with the 665's to 7.5 with the 585's and we ran faster and harder than the normal fleet 430/470 engines. In fact the boss started ordering 500's with his 2000 year trucks and set their speed at 70.

They were in 98 C120's pre emission motors no EGR no DPF or SCR equipment on them. They were test engines for the 14 L DD line. We ran the crap out of them in the time we had them. Mine when I was forced to quit driving it had 600K miles on it in 2.5 years. From what I have been able to gather the test engines were all scrapped after being torn down by Detroit in 01 since they had to change the designs to meet future EPA requirements.

Although they were available before 01, that's when they officially released the 14L and you could get new ones in trucks until 03.

I am friends with an Owner Op for a tanker company. He bought a 2018 KW T680 glider kit shoved a 2000 model year DD14 remanned engine into it and he is getting 9 MPG with it. The fleet that has 450 Cummins in those same trucks is barely getting 6.5 MPG, Why the emissions bull on the engines.

    Erm, I think not.

I had some big detroits in my time before the 2001 year and frankly just a little fuel and make that mountain FLAT. stay at or close to the speed limit upgrade loaded.

One detroit around 1994 or so give or take a year would hit milesburg at 121 or so no faster than 122 because of curve prior to upgrade. 5 miles later still slowing below 90 upgrade over the top at 65 10 miles later at torque. Elevator time.

If I had run that particular truck west, as in say... truth or conquences AZ where there is a nice 20 mile slope... whoo.

Fuel? HA. spend a gallon or three. Make some time.

The more you have in power, the less fuel burn per hour to lift a load over a mountain. I remember burning about 30 plus gallons in 3 miles to lift a 350 cat at 81000 ish up a 25% or so once. Another time with a older 60's mack I used all of my tank to get 200 miles with 134500 weighed but a theoratical max of 165000 gross on a 40 foot container.
