Swift 3 months update -- my personal experience

    Even knowing what I know now... I don't know if I would've rejected a load going from Illinois to Utah on Apr 4-7, for a home time that's 2 weeks away. Would you?

    No, not that far out.

    But with 7-8 days to go and 2000 miles?
    Start rejecting anything that does not get you closer.

    Utah to Denver should be pretty easy.
    From Denver to KS or MO or IL should also be pretty easy.
    From there to OH should be a piece of cake.

    Your DL should really be helping you more on this. That IS their job, after all.
    You work WITH the DL, not FOR the DL. The DL is supposed to be looking out for you, not working against you.

    At least, that has been my experience here.

    This thread reminds me A LOT of my first 6 months or so back at Schneider.

    Granted--your freight volume situation here is clearly worse; nonetheless--it sounds/reads a lot like the "first-year CDL driver blues".

    Suggestion: HANG IN THERE, BABY!!! (as they say)....:wav:

    If you hang tough.....and simply "out-last the problem"--it WILL get better.

    Been there, seen that....:roll:

    At this point, given current market conditions, your other possible options will likely leave you worse off than you are now.

    If you quit to go on to a "better" carrier...with (supposedly) more/better freight.....you'll have to start off at the bottom all over again--and begin once more to prove yourself (and "pay your dues") from scratch. NOOOOOTTT COOL. :tongue3: :rolleyes:

    Stick with it. Persistence pays.....trust me.

    Later on--you'll be GLAD YOU DID. :thumbup:

    This post should be required reading, AFTER what the recruiter tells you. Quite frankly, I don't see much change in the "cons" for the last 40 years. Many times, new drivers come from a supportive job, and are horrified at the apparent lack of concern. Years ago, you were hired because you convinced the boss you didn't need to be babysat. The biggest change I see, is putting up with our computer society. When loads were written on a black board in chalk, not much could go wrong, but today, with our dependence on computers, it's a different world with a mere power failure causing havoc. I go by how long a company has been around. Swift has been there, and has great accounts for years. Someone like "Blitz Trucking",,,not so much. Thanks for the positive post, you are the kind of folks that will go far in trucking, and Swift is a good start. If you make it at Swift, you'll make it about anywhere.

    I totally get what you're saying and in general that's my philosophy with any job. I have to pay my dues of course and so far I have never turned down a single load, have requested hardly any home time, and generally have been as low maintainence as possible.

    That being said, I do have bottom lines, and while I have enjoyed my trucking journey so far I really have no attachment to any company. They're just here to make money after all. If I can do better for myself I will go for it.

    So far, they've had me sitting at Salt Lake City terminal since Saturday. I have been stuck in this region since Apr 7th. It's hard for me to believe that freight is so low that with a bit of effort, nobody can figure out how to get me to Ohio hometime between Apr 7 to Apr 21. That's ridiculous. My friend that I'm visiting is very busy teaching college and doing her PhD and made a lot of effort to clear her weekend schedule way ahead of time. I'm willing to wait and give them time to figure out a way to route me there, but my patience isn't unlimited. I'm not above pulling the "if I'm not in Ohio by Saturday I'm quitting on the spot" card, if necessary.

    Of course it'll depend on what other options are out there, like you said. But yeah, if I can get a job elsewhere, and it pays better, etc, then I gotta look out for myself.

    Hopefully something pops up from SLC directly to Ohio, or atleast through Chicago/KC etc.

    For what it's worth. I pressed the nuclear button. Said in very clear terms I WILL quit if I'm not near Columbus Ohio by Saturday.

    2.5 hours later... I have a dispatch that goes to Ohio, and the drop window... is exactly Saturday 00:01-23:59.

    Make of that what you will. This was truly the nuclear option and I don't plan on ever resorting to it ever again.

    The best thing... My driver leader was really apologetic when she called me the moment my load popped up to give me the good news. Glad I didn't piss them off. Well. I must've pissed one person off, but it's not her. And #### that guy, anyways, lol.
