Got in an accident while training? They should be firing the trainer not him. And there’s no way I’d pay if you fired me. If you want me to pay give me the job that goes with it.

That said, if it’s in collections you might be able to get it down to 30% of the cost. Those guys usually buy the debt pretty cheap just looking to get anything.

 

I am going to guess that there is a high rate of default on this exact sort of debt.
Call the agency , you not your husband since you are not emotionally invested.
Tell them you might be willing to negotiate but no way are paying the full 11k.
The bought this debt for pennies on the dollar and it sounds like your stepson will never ever pay this debt left to his own devices, you know it , your son knows it and the collection agency knows it. Just make sure you convey that you are mildly motivated at best to take care of this.

But in all honesty , for the good of your son, dont pay it at all and let him sort his life out on his own. You are not helping him at all
