Well yes you can tell them when you want time off; BUT the fact is that to get you home for your hometime (time off) there has to be freight that needs to go from where you are to where you want to be.

So you may or may not get home for your hometime on the exact days you want. That's the plain truth of the matter.

As for running hard your first year..........it's all in freight. If there is freight you'll run.....if not.....you won't.

Here are some things that can get you more miles: team, run 48, get your hazmat.

Hey, Texas-Nana, I'm down to making a choice pretty soon, putting in my applications, and only because I'm near the Phoenix terminal, is not far from me, running through here was pretty regular when my wife and I were leased on to them before, so Swift is on the list. (I'd rather lease on, but I'd be going company. I was curious if the post here about their training pay was accurate, (0/0/200/200/300/400/500/500) and what a smart, hard running company solo is getting for miles these days, about 2K a week, more, or less? Starting pay is what now? Thanks, 'preciate ya!

My recruiter told me training pay was $450 for the first 4 weeks then $500 for the next 2 weeks. The cpm is:

    .25 start
    .29 4 months
    .32 6 months
    .33 9 months
    .34 1 yr

Of course that was in June so I hope and pray they have raised cpm by now, but I doubt it

    JahB Thanks this.

Check out the central truck stop link. They lowered the pay 1 penny a mile. Took away on time load delivery bonus, took away fuel surcharge for L/O up to 1000 miles. The employee is responsible for 75 percent of their insurance now, lowered detention pay and dropped deadhead from $40.00 down to $10.00, took away late home time pay and a few other things. They sent a message of qc yesterday. My friend that drives for them wasn't getting even 1500 miles a week, but I have a feeling a few drivers quit over this because he all of a sudden got a load from Florida to New York and 3 pre-sets that will put him over 3000 for the week.

Interesting story ,Rideharder. What kind of sales are you getting out of? I am also looking to get out of sales after 10 years (sick of starving and the pretensious rat race and pseudoism) and back out on the road. I drove OTR for almost 1 year about 10 years ago and have kept my CDL , I guess in the back of my mind I knew that I would get back OTR some day. The smell of Diesel still gets me going. I drove for a different company, however I found out that there is a way to get alot of miles- which is being dependable. That means sometimes running your arse off to get a hot load to the consignee ON TIME, because what that does is get your dispatcher (I guess Driver Manager is the new term these days?) to really like you because you made him/her look good as well,- so in future instances of a hot load needing to get somewhere, your dispatcher will think of you. Then you should get all the miles you want- though sometimes you get stuck in a certain corridor running 200-400 mile runs which are live loads and live unloads the mileage sometimes suffered as I remember. Bottom line, if you're the kind of driver that prefers rolling down the road over hanging out at the Truck-Stop, you should do fine. Good Luck to you.

I always thought swift ran the dog pooh out of the new students once they got their own trucks. Usually with Swift its the hire the pay scale, the less miles. Unless you are teaming or a trainer. When I worked there that was the way. I did alright on miles making 31 cents per mile. But I think students start at 25 cents. I wouldnt even want my eyes open driving for that much.

Your doubt is indeed correct. Thats been the way of Swift since I worked there in 2006. Sure it was quite the same long before that as well. But one could only hope.
