You get to meet your mentor when you get on the truck. Well, sometimes you meet them and they say "we'll go out tomorrow".
If you know someone who is a mentor or you've been told of someone who is a mentor you can request them. However.....you might have to wait if they've already got a student.

So does swift still require drivers to pay the various fees, tolls, scales etc. up front and not get reimbursed for weeks on end? And are swift loads really mostly drop and hook like I've heard...
-
Yes they do require you to pay for all fees and lumpers. They also quit reimbursing at all.
Also, Swift is now a 75% driver load operation now.cookie278 and Schmidtrock Thank this. -

As Nana said you meet your mentor usually the last day of orientation and will most likely get on the truck at that time. Mentor may or may not be taking a day or so off so ymmv. If there are issues where you aren't getting along or safety or health related, you may contact your student DM and request a Mentor change. You won't be stuck with someone who just wants to run your log. Remember, they are getting paid team rate for the truck, so there are a few unscrupulous mentors out there. Like I said though, you can alert your student DM to a situation like that and they will take care of it. I firmly believe Swift is trying to weed out the scuzzy folks in their mentor ranks.

Dunno if we're talking about the same thing, but As of about the start of April 2010, swift is taking on 3rd party trucks again. I been to a couple terminals where they had nice lookin T2000s (ones that had the big window in the back). The lease lady from Greer for swift told me "oh those are 'outright buy' trucks', then correted herself, and said they were lease trucks. She also told me that you cannot get into an 'outright purchase' truck without going thru a lease first. I know they have some 2005 Columbia's with half a billion miles, and probably look like Shatner, but you make payments on $20k and the truck is yours, no balloon, no nothing. But i dont want some run down crap truck.
I just dont see myself leasing a truck from swift just to jump into a truck i can 'buy'. they always tack on a $50k balloon at the end of a lease because they know after a year of $500 a week, no driver can come up with the balloon.....so..............they get the truck back, and you get another lease, to keep paying for a truck for swift you'll never own.
i'm happy as a company driver, though i'd be nice to have my own ride. I just saw my check for this tuesday. 2700 miles and i cleared $720. -
do you even know what you're talking about? or you just guessing??
Swift is NOT 75% driver load op. I cannot tell you the last time i touched freight. As far as the lumpers go....you can still pay by comcheck. you can pay by cash, and you ARE reimbursed. Tolls are paid by the transponder in your truck (if you have it). if you dont have it, you pay it, and swift pays you back. Dunno what flavor of Kool-Aid dodge is drinking, but there must not be enough sugar in it. -
Dick, I believe dodge was being sarcastic
And as for reimbursements, its been hubbys experience (not much granted), that he gets reimbursed fairly quickly, usually on next check
-
sorry, didnt get that. =)

Me either. I was about to jump him with a broom.
