I never had a problem getting paid for the route I took if there was a good reason. A call to my dm would have him re-route me city to city along the new route and get paid for it. Example: took a load from Montana south one winter and the paid route had me going over a road closed in the winter. Called and got re routed and paid. Not all companies will do this, however.
Depending on my mood, I have went thru ATL a bunch. Also if you deliver inside the circle you can prolly get away with it anyways.
The fuel route has NOTHING to do with miles paid, repeat NOTHING! In fact I didn't get a fuel route for my last 2 loads nor a dispatch thingy on my Qualcom's GPS.
I know, the real complaint by most guys is. The pay is usually shortest route miles. The routing is not. It is whatever they feel like. Which may or may not include cheapest fuel they can et in a 10 state radius. That can mess up a decent route in a hurry. One specific example I can remeber. Picked up in Wi headed to FW, Tx.Wanted me to fuel at the J in Peculiar. 35 to 435 to 71 Fuel and back up 71 to 435 to 35. I ended up fueling there but ran down 71 as opposed to back UP to 35.
Well, sometimes the shortest route is not really the best route - nor the most economical, or even the fastest.
This is from management as of yesterday, miles are calculated by Rand McNally, center of zip to center of zip. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Good advice to add a few miles when figuring your drive time.
Ya you rarely win you most lose quite a bit, like tonight I ran 495 miles for 420 paid because they ran me 70 miles out of the way, I should have know better I could have fueled near 1 of my stops but I followed the route. Oh well guess the wont mind I drove 50 miles out of the way to run home for the night and if the do I don't give ####
My worst example (as a company driver) was the fuel route I was given from Lancaster, PA to Kansas City. They ran me south into Maryland then west on I-68 (to avoid the PA turnpike). For those who haven't had the pleasure I-68 is a roller coaster, a beautiful drive in a car, a real workout in a 78,000 lb truck. When I stopped for the night on the western end of I-70 in PA I used the GPS to check the mileage had I used the turnpike, 55 miles shorter. Considering I was only getting 5.4 MPG to this point the extra fuel used alone would have paid the tolls on the turnpike. And of course I got paid for the shortest route.
You win some you loose more. Delivered in Pontoon Beach Il. Pu in Granite City. Right across the road. Got paid like 10mt miles or so.
Best I ever managed was to get paid 89 MT miles to go to a place 40 miles away. Crazy part it was less than 30 miles from where I MTed out the day before. Go Figure!
