You know, i am a graduate of the swift academy, while i was there, i was in shock at the people who they let drive these monsters. Some of these people i wouldn't trust using a riding lawnmower, and worse yet, while i was training out the Washington State branch, I saw 3 totaled trucks in three weeks, that was just out of my terminal. I have to say, the last two years i have worked at a Distribution Warehouse, and I have seen bad drivers from every company. On two occasions i had to go out and help talk them into backing into the dock, and they were a solo driver.

I think these big carriers like swift put these awesome machines in the hands of very inexperienced people who have no business driving something that big. The problem is they push people through school's way too fast, and then slam then get them with a trainer who i have seen some in it for the extra money and they weren't no better themselves, i went through 2 myself, one argued hours everyday with his wife and kid, middle eastern guy who spent more time yelling on the phone then teaching me, other guy barely spoke English and couldn't understand a #### thing. Some people like myself picked up and the truck driving came more natural, but most of the people i went through the swift academy with, should have never been given a CDL.

 

That's a industry wide problem though. Every training company puts 'drivers' behind the wheel of a rig that don't have enough common sense to ride a bike. And what makes it worse it that they put them in brand new trucks. Even with my experience level, I can't seem to get a truck with under 300,000 miles. Yet a student who just upgraded to solo with no previous driving experience besides a 4 wheeler gets a brand new truck with under 50 miles. I just shake my head and think to myself, "That's a accident waiting for a place to happen".

 

In all your vast experience of just over a year?

It's called luck of the draw. You get what's available. Trucking companies can't afford to have resources sitting around doing nothing. People and equipment are both resources. To your way of thinking, two resources should sit around for a week waiting for you to return to the terminal so you can get what you want.

It's no different than being assigned a desk in an office. You get what you get. Deal with it, get a lease, buy your own or change jobs.

Personally, as a company driver, I would be happier with a 250 to 300K truck over brand new. It is a very

rare brand new truck that does not win d up in the shop several times in the first few months of service.

 

How many times do I need to tell you I drove for more companies than CRE? Last time I checked, Werner didn't have any 6 wheelers or buses in their OTR/DG fleets.

 

I don't like newer trucks, but for a different reason. I don't want to be the driver who puts the first scratch or dent on the equipment.

I'm a company driver, so I don't care much about replacing parts on a truck as I'm not the one paying the bill.

 

Garbage trucks and school buses don't count.

 

Since when did Werner have those in their fleets?

And since you want to argue over this for the umpti-billionth time, what makes a box truck different from a semi, besides the obvious weight? You're still under the same regs.
