Swift does not make you sign a contract... only contract you'll sign is to repay the loan for the schooling, whether or not you decide to stay a full year (time it takes to be repaid via pay deduction).

With local driving, you'll probably have to put in some OTR time before they have you doing that. Really depends on what the demand for those positions are in the terminal you'll be based out of.

Swift is very hit and miss and your experience with them will be dependent on what terminal you operate from and who your driver manager is. My experience has been mostly positive and have been treated well. A good and professional attitude will also help, not only with this company, but in alot of other aspects in this field.

The pay is mediocre and there surely is a stigma driving for them because of a well-earned reputation for having drivers that have no business in the industry... but it's one of the few companies that require nothing upfront to get started. You will have to take some things on the chin... but keep your head down and attitude in check, keep your record clean, get your year's experience then look for more suiting opportunities.

    Good luck out there.

Hello dont people ever read the original post this guy is not currenttly a driver and is trying to get into the industry to work local another words he will require training therefore must sign a contract and I used to work for swift at a point of time there is a reason why they are mentioned so often as a bad company to work for.. I at least try to be honest and not steer a new guy in the wrong direction which he will regret

Just giving him some advice on what else to expect.

Perhaps they did contracts when you drove for them or to drive on a certain account you were on, but there were no contracts to stay employed with Swift when I signed on 'bout 1.5 yrs ago.

This is trucking, believe nothing you are told and only half of what you see.

I worked for Swift for two years. Overall I was treated fairly decent, made better pay than some on here would have you believe, and in no way do I regret my time there. Does Swift have a bad rep? Yes... They'll hire pretty much anyone with a pulse and can see fairly straight. Pay is comparable to most any other starting company. First year there I made 35000, second year I did slightly better and made 42000. But you're going to earn it, like any other starting job, you start at the bottom of the heap. How well you do depends 90% on you, and 10% on freight and your ability to handle the runaround.
I already had my CDL when I went to swift, but did talk to a few folks while there that went to Swift training. They were not forced to work for the company for a year. They signed a contract that said they would pay back the loan for schooling. This could be done through payroll deduction and if they did stay for a year, that money would be returned to them.
Swift will NOT give you a local job right out of school. They are an over the road company and that's what they hire for. They do have some local jobs available, but like almost anyplace else, you have to put some time in before you can get one.
Do not make your decision based solely on this thread, or even this site. This is not a job, its a complete lifestyle. DO PROPER RESEARCH before you make any decision

    Honch Thanks this.
