the best advice is to use whats available to your advantage, get your experience, make what money you can, keep your record clean and move on to something better, but you have to think long term. good luck and b safe.

I didn't like the dispatchers calling me up 2 hours after I got home and demanding that I come sit in the dinky little terminal they have until my next load was ready. First couple times I told them to piss off and I'd be back when my 10 was up. After that, I quit answering my phone. Quit shortly thereafter.

Take what he says with a grain of salt since, he's not quite as knowledgable as he thinks he is.

Opelousas is a dry DC ... Swift operates out of the wet DC in Roberts

If you really want to know how it works and if you actually live in the area ... call the DC and ask to talk with the Swift manager. Set up an appointment to meet with them and find out from the person you will actually be working for, what the scoop is.

Louisiana is tanker territory. If i were you, my goal would be to get into a tanker truck.

"But Six, i can't find a tanker company that will hire a rookie and have me home."

I look at tomorrow too, not just today.

let me share a story about swift, i remember them many years ago telling me the grass wasn't greener on the other side, many yrs after that i was working for a company that ran their operations out of the same DC as swift, and they were actually sharing the same office space as swift with the exception of a divider in the office. the company i worked for paid better for the same job overall, i remembered when they told me the grass wasn't greener on the other side, yet i remember hearing swift dispatchers yelling and arguing with drivers who were paid less to do the same job as me from just across the room..swift was good to me when i was there and it served its purpose but remember this, keep your record clean of accidents and tickets and after that you can go anywhere, they want you to mess up so you are stuck there, if you decide to stay there even if your record is clean,at least you will know it was because you wanted to and not because you had to.

I've helped out on a couple Walmart accounts.
The first time should have stopped me from ever doing it again, but I'm a putz I guess.

It was in Florida, and I had a pick up time of 0330.
That is what I planned for, and I had to adjust my sleep schedule for it.
At 0030 I was woken up with a phone call to tell me that my load was ready, so I could come pick it up.
I went a bit ballistic because I was taken out of a sound sleep for such nonsense. But they kept doing it.

The other time was near Denver.
I was promised a certain pay per day, but it didn't happen. I was only paid for the short miles I ran.

I've 'helped out' with Walmart and Target, and with both I got hosed in some way - and both with the pay.

So now, never again will I help out with any dedicated account.

    Where was that?

Because I remember being at a DC where Swift shared the space.
    I just can't remember where.

I said that I've never worked for Swift or Walmart. And I was just using Opelousas as an example, but it just so happens that Robert is almost the exact same distance, in the other direction, from Baton Rouge.
