Gentlemen and ladies... I am looking for information on the best company for a newbe to start with....I was just informed that the state is shutting us down to save money... I have been thinking of driving a truck for a while and the area I am in has a unemployment rate of 20-25%. I grew up around trucking...my dad owned a small trucking company in the 70's before he passed and after he passed my next door neighbor got me a job as a grease monkey at the small (10 truck) trucking company that he worked at. I know things have changed due to new regulations. I have been researching trucking companies and have heard a lot of good and bad on all of them. Can ya'll help out? What is the best for a starter to get into? I appreciate the assist.

Yes, please call swift! Listen to their line of B.S. then laugh in their face and hang up!

Brian D: I would suggest you go to the "Trucking Company DAC Reports" and look at what's being said from within the companies. Swift isn't the only starter company out there and may not be the perfect fit. Besides...if you look in the "Bad Trucking Companies" section, you will be inundated with BS from hecklers who have no idea what they're talking about and exagerated stories from disgruntled ex-employees. No company is perfect. They all have their own flavor of BS. You just have to decide whether you prefer Angus, Brahma or Hereford flavor. Only you will know the answer to that.

Check out that DAC forum area and when you find someone in a company forum who seems to know what they're talking about, ask that person questions. You have to place 7 posts before you can private message a member...unless you shoot it through a moderator.

And welcome to the forum. :)

Brian D: welcome to the Truckers Report. I agree with Injun about researching. Please be cautious as to who you listen to. There are reliable people on the forum and then there are just hecklers. While Injun and myself work for Swift (as do a number of forum members) there are other reliable forum members who have a differing opinion of Swift. I wish you well in your research and the beginning of your new career.

I completely agree with these two. Honestly, if I had heeded the "advice" of the naysayers, I probably would have missed out on the best job I've ever had. Been with these guys for 4 years now and don't see myself going anywhere anytime.

I myself think Swift suks,,BUT,, for the actual driving school.
The school in Millington Tn,,I think is one of the best starting points for a new driver,

I no longer work for Swift,, but I did start with Swift,,and think your best bet may be Swift,,then move on as quickly as you can.

I spoke with a buddy of my brother in law who I met a few times before and as it turns out he has worked with Swift for the last 5 years and now is a owner operator for them. He said the first two years were hard but he listened to an old timer who told him to stick it out and he gave me thethe same advise. Like most jobs he said it had ups and downs. I spoke with a recruter yesterday from Swift and Conway. I like Conway but I can't afford the $2200 up front and I like the payback program that Swift has. Swift told me that my bro in laws buddy can do a one time DT on me and I would be teamed up with someone I know. So I called the guy up and he agreed to it. I am still loking around. I want to check everything out a bit more till I commit. But unless things change it looks like I will be working for Swift.
