I failed to mention that some people don't have the right fit to endure 2500_ mile trips in a week, they would certainly love it but couldnt do it. It's too tiring. And they excel at overnights, LTL etc. It keeps them popping as we used to say. Rolling smoke or pills I don't know.

See here, you all have been good to me with presenting your views opposing salary and some of you even presented a middle of road gaurantees. Which is essentially a salary provided you do this and that and other.

What is it so hard for management or rather the industry to understand that the Miles pay is obsolete. Sure you can pay the newly arrived US Citizen from Other Nations 0.34 and they will smile and say thank you. Because they don't understand that back int he 70's thats what you paid top hands. I was lucky to see 24 cents. If that. I remember one 21 year old paid get this... 0.21 and he had a brand new FLD 120 he could not stop crowing about the #### thing in the Baltimore Harbor Shop.

One wonders why he stayed there the day in a heavy truck repairs shop with a brand new FLD 120?

    HA.

I repeat. If Salary is a good easy concept provided you can still identify slackers, lazies and others who just cannot do it right in your outfit needing hand holding etc in your dispatch phone calls etc. there is no problem trimming your company tree. No harm.

Im pretty sure you in Managment at a high enough level GOT salary. How would you like it if you were paid per paper sheet pushed from In box to outbox? Hmmmm?

Granted no company can or will afford to pay people not to work, for any long period of time.
The flip side is, when a grown adult knows he has a good job. He will go the extra mile to keep it. When your raising a family and mama knows every Friday xx amount hits the bank. That makes life better. It is easier to plan budget and save. Something has to go bad wrong before a good guy (or mama will allow) will quit.

You make some good points. All I really know is that the way we do things works for us. The drivers are content with the way things are. We have a good crew and driver turnover is almost non-existent. Our drivers have to have five years experience before we'll hire them and with that level of experience they could go anywhere they wanted.
We have no shortage of applicants.

That's one of the reasons I've always set my truck up to run any/every type of trailer utilized by any company I lease on with. Quick drop & hook and I keep working when it slows in one fleet while there's more work than they can handle in others.

Freight is freight, and trailers are trailers. Show me the money. I couldn't care less what I haul or which sort of wagon I'm hooked to...as long as it pays.

Drivers should be paid hourly, but set them a production minimum. It’s like construction you’re paid hourly but expected to get the tasks done.
After this year I’ll be trying to find a local job that pays hourly as I go back to school. I love this work, but I’d rather be at a desk if I’m honest.
