Is there a rule that prohibits a driver from switching cycles on the fly?
I am a driver between Canada and the USA, therefore I have two cycles, primary and secondary, 70/8 and 70/7 accordingly, I just got back to Canada and getting close to my 70 hrs so I switched to the Canadian cycle 120/14, the software allowed me to changed it and it didn’t put in any kind of violation, I am safe to drive tomorrow a full day without running into any violation?
Switching cycles!

If you can run on recap that would be better ... As far as switching goes as long as you get 24 hours straight off before 70 hrs your good to go but remember you MUST take 72 hours off to switch back to the 70/7 70/8 cycles

Yeah, can't switch Cycles on-the-fly. Just because your ELD allowed it, doesn't make it legal and you're the one that is ultimately responsible. It makes for a difficult calculation for the ELD and because it's used so rarely (especially by drivers who run in the US), I would expect most ELDs to just have a brain fart.
29. CYCLE SWITCHING — OFF-DUTY TIMEOf course it also means that if you are running Cycle 2 and end up having to do a reset in the US it has to be 72 hours or you run the risk of being put OOS for 72 hours if stopped in Canada.
(1) No motor carrier shall request, require or allow a driver to switch and no driver shall switch from one cycle to the other without first taking the following off-duty time before beginning to drive again:
(a) to switch from cycle 1 to cycle 2, at least 36 consecutive hours; or(2) After taking the off-duty time, the driver begins the other cycle, the accumulated hours are set back to zero and the driver’s hours begin to accumulate again.
(b) to switch from cycle 2 to cycle 1, at least 72 consecutive hours.

tinytim, lovesthedrive, brian991219 and 2 others Thank this. -
Dang that's confusing.

That's not for me.
Already working 70 a week and darn tooting I aint adding more than already in there. I agree it's very confusing. -
Not really that confusing if you take a second...
US: two "cycles"
- 60/7
- Reset 34 hours
- 70/8
- Reset 34 hours
- 70/7
- Reset 36 hours
- 120/14
- Reset 72 hours
- All drivers must have at least 24 consecutive hours of off-duty time in the preceding 14 days. Cycle 2 is either preceding 14 days or maximum 70 hours on-duty time, whichever occurs first.
- 60/7

No recap hours there?
And that last point for Canada can be interpreted several different ways.
