I currently have a Galaxy 44v (old radio) that is in the 40 watt range.
Running a Wilson 2000 antenna with 9ft of coax.

The coax was a little short so it pinches in the door and is cracked so time to replace it.

The last CB shop is the one that used the 9ft of coax and set SWR on it after cutting about a foot of the whip off.

I have my own stand alone SWR meter so i ordered new coax and a new Wilson 2000.
My question is i have a brand new Cobra 29 that is bone stock.
Should i use the Cobra to tune the antenna then mount the Galaxy back in its place?

I know with the Galaxy it was hard to get the SWR set.

My plan is to install the new coax, hook up the Cobra, set SWR and put the Galaxy back in...Would that be the way to go?
Just thinking that the 4 watt Cobra would give a more accurate reading on the meter?
I hope i will not need to cut that much of the new antenna down.

    Simple answer?...
    YUP.

The probable reason you had a hard time getting the 'bumped up' radio SWR down might have been because of the output. if the antenna is tuned to the frequency, it's tuned to a radio operating on that frequency.

    Thanks! My thoughts too.
I hope i will not need to cut so much off of the new antenna.

Not sure why the CB shop had to butcher the old antenna....looks funny with such a short whip.
My receive is not that great with that short antenna either.

I should have used my meter and done it myself in the first place....

Yes you can but the swr meter in the cobras are known ro not always be accurate better using a external meter to tune your antenna

    Thanks,
I have an external SWR meter that i will be using. I trust it much more than the built in Cobra meter.

If your using the external meter you should just mount your galaxy, there's going to be no very little difference in SWR between radios...

It doesn't make any sense to me why you would need to go through all of the trouble to mount that cobra and get the SWR set on that radio when you could just do it with the galaxy instead.

    Thanks Logan,
I thought about doing that first just to see what the Galaxy shows.
It just takes a couple minutes to swap them around though.

I remember before i was getting a high SWR reading off the Galaxy but the Cobra tuned in easy.
I guess the wattage output of the Galaxy could show high SWR on the meter....?

I don't think how many watt's your radio puts out has anything to do with SWR, maybe one of the more experienced CB guys can chime in...JJD?

if you are talking about 100 watts or less there will be no difference in how the swr sets, now if you are talking about 400+ watts then the swr meter goes a little squirlly. not to mention you are only using the deadkey, keying up the mic, to set the swr's you are not modulating. you are setting the antenna not the radio, if the antenna is set at 1.5 with a cobra, then it will be 1.5 with a galaxy, uniden, stryker, etc. just my .02 as an amateur thats hasnt burned a radio up yet,(knocking on wood).

Thanks Guys,I ended up tuning the Galaxy......New coax, new wilson 2000.
The best i could get after about an hour of trimming and adjusting was 1 to 1.3.

I hooked up the Cobra just for a test and same reading.
I noticed the receive on the Cobra was better.......maybe the old Galaxy is on its way out.
