Just a thought that crossed my mind... Is there a quantitative measurement to each 0.1 swr below perfect 1:1, and how does that relate in distance transmitted or received? (Last I checked mine was 1:1.3)

I also have the same question for the Frequency counter, mine was opened to 6 digits 27.1850, and not sure how much tuning is really necessary beyond 5 digits, since mine will drift 27.1847 and 27.1852. Everything works great regardless, but is there a dB measurement for .0001 freq. change?

I do realize there are many variables in antenna and placement, just looking for a rule of thumb if possible.

[IMG] That's an awesome question but in order to answer it you need to be able to figure out a wattage increase as it relates to SWR getting lower. If you had a precision tool to measure output you could convert to dBm.

There's a chart that might help

Thanks for the calculator Rabbi, really helps mentally visualizing how the loss gets amplified.

Truthfully, it doesn't matter for receive or transmit below 1.3:1, this is as close to a reading as you may get without getting really deep into other factors involved, including coax velocity, etc. ... . Using something that has more in-depth calculations would produce the results that could, but not needed, help you at this point.

People are so hung up on SWR, it is amazing that there are other things that are involved that they can look at to help.

No DB measurement for drift, it is Parts per Million - PPM. The drift you see could be from the counter clock itself, it isn't a really stable thing to begin with - most likely a cheap crystal and nothing else to adjust for the drift of the clock frequency.

By the way, I hate 6 digits unless I am using a counter for precision work. I would have stuck to the 5 digit instead of seeing it flicker between digits, that's pretty annoying after a while.

My SWR is at 0.5 on my Galaxy Pluto radio and running it with the old Wilson 1000 which I have had over 25 years. It's not the "Barjunk" Wilson's they sell at truck stops today. My radio has the 5 digit counter.

Dave not trying to dispute your numbers but there is a little problem with having .5:1 swr on any system, it is impossible because it is a ratio between forward power and reflective power and can't be less than 1:1. You can't have more power coming back than you put in, so it bottoms right at 1:1.

By the way, it seems the old Wilson are the best. I have a collection of them from back in the day and it won't be the antenna I sell one day when I get rid of my collection.

I've got 3, maybe 4 of the old Wilson 1000s. I've never had a good talking radio with a high SWR..........realizing that isn't all there is to it....just sayin'.

When they set the SWR, the shop said that they couldn't get any lower, it was right where it should be and I think he said it was under 1.1.1 or .05. Anyways he made a comment that it was as low as its was gonna get and he extremely please with the antenna. I'm not a tech but when I hear someone say you have an awesome set up, I take there for it since there the professionals. I can hear skips on my radio all day long, when I run with other driver with good radios, they can't hear all the stuff I hear on my radio. Like I have mention here before, I'm running a Galaxy Pluto, with the Wilson 1000 with the SRA 198 Mic. I also have a Galaxy 44 for a back up, and a Wilson 1000 magnet mount(antenna has 8 spike looking base, don't know the purpose for it), and finally 2 old school Turner RK 56 mic in my collection which I don't plan to cut loose in the future.
