I would try grounding and perhaps a longer shaft to get the coil closer to the roof line... IIRC, they make up to a 18" shaft for the trucker antennas..
I would also try to find an open field and test... yes it does make a differance from what i found
Swr problem my Wilson 5000

Yea I know open area help because I tried my magnet mount cheapo on the roof swr are less then 1.5 in the parking lot then get to a city area they go up over 2 but my Wilson 5000 gets about the same distance at 2.8

Well if look at this way.

You need to get the SWR down close to 1.1.
Length of the cable is not going to make a difference nor the if the cable is RG8 or RG58 or RG59 or a large RG238 if you have a bad ground.
I have used them all and different lengths, as long as 200 feet for testing antennas.
A magnet mount in the center of the metal roof gives you a solid metal base and good ground if you do not want to drill a hole in you roof instead.
The center of the metal roof is the highest point on the truck or car with nothing around it and give the best broadcasting mobile platform.
If you get a SWR on the roof is less then 1.5 with a cheapo magnet mount.
And you are getting a really bad SWR of 2.8 and 2.4 with the Wilson 5000 on the fender.
It is not rocket science.
I would put the Wilson 5000 on the roof with either a magnet mount kit or drill a hole in the in the center roof and mount the Wilson 5000.

Yea I know I should just put the #### thing on the roof already

But then what the heck would I post about

Grounds, Grounds, Grounds.... Add a ground strap (not cable but strap) from a fender use a sheet metal screw and remove the paint where the strap makes contact to the fender., also fender to hood, fender to main body. Make sure you have nothing shorting out the mount.
This should fix it up. Also check the pl259 connector. -
You do not need to go to the roof, although it is the best place electrically. All your grounds should start at the battery not the frame.
-
Thank You ,will try grounds before I move it to the roof , Checked for shorts with meter good to go there.
-

lol.....
your good....lol
-
Thank you for the help one more try then to the roof it is.

I had this problem on a 2000 Sonoma only with the bed. Went to the front fender and solved all my problems, but didn't like it there. So I drilled a hole in the roof and mounted it there (Wilson 1000). Yeah I had to take it off to get it in the garage until I built a new garage. Went with a 9ft door and now I only have to bend it over.....much better!
Whoever said "groundstraps, groundstraps, groundstraps was correct!!!!
