I have a 1:4 swr when the trucks idling sitting in a parking lot, if I talk into the mic the needle pegs the 3:1, if i just sit there with a dead key its right around 1:4. is that normal?
Yes because as power changes so does calibrate. Meaning you can only measure properly at the power you calibrated properly. When you modulate there is no longer a fixed power level or proper calibration, meaning the SWR reading becomes meaningless. At higher power levels line currents on the shield make a reading incorrect as well. I should add: always measure at the minimum power for proper calibration for highest accuracy.
