yea, drivers tend to get the shaft when it comes to all the ammenities and stuff. Inside sales and other people working inside have all the time to lounge around and take part of the freebies.

I guess to do a proper pre-trip, they expect you to come in sooner? Maybe overtime, or is it expeceted that you donate your time and come in earlier?

As long as your happy now, brother, that's all that matters. Who knows, I start tomorrow, the marriage may end quickly, or this may end up being the last job I ever work. I guess, we'll see.

laci73 - who do you work for now? I live just west of you!

I just applied at Sysco yesterday, I think after reading this post I will withdraw my interest in it if they phone me. I cannot stand junk equipment, and I like dedicated units. I take great care of equipment and I want fair treatment for that in return.

Hey Tank, do not look at this as a junk...they still made it back to yard. If you have 120 drivers sharing equipment do not expect it to have it your way you like it. Some of them are better, some of them are beater. Lot of this come from drivers itself, because some of them care, some of them don't. Thats one day you have OK truck, another is all covered with cigarette ash and coffee spills. But thats people. Sysco spouse to get 11 new freightliners in september, but by that time I was already gone. So maybe now is bit a better now then before. Other hand...there is a bit of future with Sysco, because people have to eat.

What was the physical test you have to do? I was thinking of applying here in Victoria.....

I just had my first day out here in Vancouver. Here are some highlights:

They just inplemented a new training program. We went around everywhere at the plane an met a whole bunch of people. Even the president. They take driver's very seriously, as the final piece of the customer service puzzle.. It looks like it's going to be pretty decent. All loads are going to get scanned before you leave the yard, and they are switching everything to portable scanners, which, at the time of the offloading at the restaurant, you will be able to print customer receipts, take payments, etc. It doesn't even sounf like we are going to get driving until late next week. Everyone get's their dedicated route, which is great for developing customer rapport. Shifts consist of 4 x 10 hr shifts, 3 days off.

The equipment don't seem all that bad. There is no smoking permittted in the trucks (surely some people do), so they need to be clean. If they are not, you report it, and action is taken.

The physical test wasn't so bad. They warm you up by walking a few steps, then speed it up to a slow running pace. You then take a pallet of grocery goods (from boxes of chips, bottles of mineral water, bags of potatoes, etc) and you have to move everything via hand dolly, to a new pallet about 100 ft away, without dropping anything, and nothing can fall over, break, etc. It is timed. Then there are a bunch of stretching, position tests (they get you to hold an awkward positions for as long as you can). The entire test takes about 45 min.

It's a pretty long application process. They are in need of people, but do not sacrifice for the sake of that need. I got hired in about a month and a half.

I'm sure I left stuff out.

    Cheers Everyone!

They were talking about that scan system for drivers, but at that time only wearhouse people were using it.
I had a 4 x 10 hours shifts too, than 3 days off. After 1 week in Sysco already having a seniority :)

10 hour shifts just make me mad. If your doing local work it should be 8 hours like every other tom dick and harry.

I don't think I would make it at Sysco. I just want Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day. I will not work weekends for anybody unless I am running highway.

Not to mention, I can't stand all these cheap companies buying Freightliners, you get what you pay for, junk trucks.

You sound like you won't go too far in life.

Power to yeah being "one of those guys" who keep the economy running by doing as little as you can.

    I have standards.

I won't drive some cheap crappy truck to make some guy who is likely a a-hole, rich. Way to many drivers just drive whatever they are given, and do whatever they are told. Do you wonder why there are no standards in this industry? I'm not saying I need a long nose KW or Pete with lights and chrome all over the place to make me happy. What I am saying is, driving trucks with broken dash pieces, ripped up, stinky old musty interiors, bald tires, weird noises and vibrations coming from every part of the truck, that is not for me. I take pride in what I do, and if you willingly drive whatever junk someone throws at you, your no better than the worst drivers in this industry.

As far as I am concerned, we need more companies like Western Distributing Transportation Corporation. One rip in your interior and you would likely be fired.

Only 1% of people likely stick up for themselves and demand better working conditions.

You would NEVER, EVER, see a office manager, or CEO, sitting in a stinky, dirty musty office, with a torn up chair. You would never see them with the cheapest pens money can buy, or a stapler that came from the Dollar Store.

Why should I, as a Truck Driver, accept the very same deficiencies that a management person never would? Your office chair and your computer might be your equipment, but the cab of that truck and everything about it is mine. Why can't I as the driver, have an enjoyable, clean, "office" space to take some pride in. It would make employee's happy, which in turn will keep them longer, if not until retirement. The fact that a truck is not comparable to an office space is completely ridiculous, and nothing but an excuse.

It's very very easy to hire someone at any age, even right out of high school, and keep them until retirement. You pay them well, you give them great benefits, you give them great hours, you treat them with respect, and you give them what they deserve. The problem with to many companies, with almost all of them actually, is it is plain greed. The definition of a successful company is to make 2.5% MORE PROFIT, EACH YEAR, than the previous year. This is why the U.S has and still is swirling down the pipe. Large increases in profit, year, after year, after year, after year, after year, after year, after year, cannot, go on, forever! Companies expect the same profit margins in a recession as they do in booming times. Nothing in life works this way.

All I can tell you is, if I was making hundreds of millions of dollars a year, or even tens of millions, I would use a huge chunk of that to pay my people high wages, and never have to worry about turn over again. You could very easily still run your company and have money to spare for bad times. Oh wait...you really need that $1,000,000 home right? You need the 7 vehicles in the garage worth $75,000 each? Oh yea, I just KNOW you can't go without your $800,000 yacht, that you pay someone $100,000 a year to skipper it for you 4 weeks out of the summer.

People do not deserve everything they want. The long lived "American Dream" attitude of muscle cars in the driveway of a $400,000 house, boat and RV in the backyard, for every citizen, is exactly why the world is in the shape it is. Next time you think you deserve whatever makes you happy, think again. You do not truly need 90% of everything you have.

All I am asking for is a nice truck....really not hard at all.

I think you're already made up your mind. Don't waste your time, or ours. Have a nice day.
