At least you can still get the cinnamon rolls. I've seen the Black Bear restaurants here and there. I haven't had a chance to eat at one. Chain restaurants are taking over man. The locally owned places are dying off one by one. When I think deeply about it, it feels like a lot of contributing factors. I think the ELD era is a contributing factor. Nobody feels like they have time to sit down somewhere and eat anymore. There was a time when you could eat just about anywhere around the clock. The pandemic killed that off in a lot of places. The rise of GrubHub and such I think is negatively impacting that style of restaurant eating. Used to, you'd just be happy eating at whatever restaurant the truck stop had. Now you can pretty much get whatever you want brought to you. All of the corporate truck stops will have chain restaurants, and hole in the wall truck stops will be serving fried chicken. That's become the norm.

This what TA/Petro does best.
Flat Earth Trucker, TurkeyCreekJackJohnson, MACK E-6 and 2 others Thank this. -
Last time I was at Johnson’s corner I wasn’t impressed with the restaurant, would much rather prefer Black Bear diner.
Concorde Thanks this. -
Last time I was there the portions were really cut down. Food didn’t taste all that great and the service was lousy. When I ate there the last time I knew I’d never eat there again.
Was just there last week and didn’t even notice if they were open or closed.
I also vaguely remember remember reading something awhile back that the restaurant owner wasn’t going to renew their lease with TA. Probably why it went downhill.
Personally I love eating at the Black Bear Diner’s. Although some locations are better than others in regards to atmosphere and portions. Barstow, CA is the best an Kingman, AZ comes in at a close second imo.

Dood! Get with the program and stop and eat at a Black Bear..you won’t regret it. I’m partial to their Open Faced hot turkey sandwich..That’s if prime rib isn’t available on the menu…only certain days available.
Lastly I don’t agree with the thread title, in fact it’s a huge improvement for TA/Petro.bryan21384, navypoppop, Long FLD and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yeah, having the diner as pat of it puts it in the top 25% of major chain truckstops these days. I remember 40 years ago, T/A was kinda like the McD's of thruckstops; nothing special, but there was a certain level of quality that was there. Petro was like Burger King (back when they were a BIT better than Mc D's), and Flying J was the tops. Ah, the good old days....
FWIW, I stopped there once; liked the layout of the building, but the food was pretty plain. Nothing really great enough for me to seek it out the dozen-or-so times I went down that stretch of highway.navypoppop Thanks this. -
Totally unrelated, but I wasn't aware that Buc-ees had infiltrated that far north...or west...
bryan21384 Thanks this. -
TA didn't ruin anything. Between the days of Covid and a lot of drivers not eating in the restaurants anymore you should be glad that they just didn't close the restaurant altogether due to lack of support. At least a Black Bear is a decent choice and a lot better than a Dennys or IHOP. And please don't mention Buccees in a post for trucks and drivers. They don't want or like us so leave them to the 4 wheelers and tourists.
