TA

Never thought I would miss the old 76's. I loved those stops. The original Petro was great. Plenty of parking, food was good, everything was clean. And man do I miss the old Giant truck stop in Gallup NM. They don't make em like that anymore.

 

So did I, I'm retired now. However during my last few years or so I would go into the old places that are today operating as a TA. Always left with a moist eye because I have so many memories of being in those places while out with my dad. Times were different then. Them burgers were good and the cokes cold. I was reading some about Lou Gehrig's speech as he walked off the field the last time.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth.

No, I'm not saying I am anything like him, just that even though my body has failed me I am lucky to have known society when it was better. The truck stops were real ones and they did not rob a driver either. Drivers were more tuned to helping each other. Also, they would sometimes sit close to each other and just talk. I remember such conversations about the Moon Shots as well as the RFK & MLK murders. Those days are never coming back!
