No, you call ahead on places you don't know and make sure all is well. Call before you leave the shipper! I do it all the time. I don't do it 100% of the time but it doesn't bother me at all to check on a place first.

The way to make it in this world is to figure out a way to control your destiny, not let some lousy warehouse control it.

Problem wirh saying to hire more workers is covid. Most warehouse guys are making more money sitting around and collecting unemployment than if they were working a normal shift.

The situation has been around much longer than Covid. A convenient excuse for the warehouses though.

My first trip to a refinery near San Francisco let me and my tanker of acid sit hooked up to their tank for 36 hours the first time I delivered there. Instead of getting $250 for a 2 day layover, I got paid almost 3 times that amount as detention plus about 4,000 miles for the week.

    alds and kemosabi49 Thank this.

That one thing I liked about running chemical tanks. Detention, or demurrage as it is called, is something that all the shippers and consignees know they will have to pay if they cause a delay. And not like some freight haul companies that only pay detention for a few hours and then call it a layover. Tankers get the demurrage 24 hr a day until they are done. Place in Indiana I used to go to always took 33 to 36 hrs. Fat paycheck.

tscottme, alds, 650cat425 and 3 others Thank this.
